I've been given delivery specs which include Prores 4:2:2 HQ with YUV 4:2:2 color sampling. This is a subject where I'm out of my depth and I was wondering if someone could explain it to me.

What color sampling does Prores use, and if it's not YUV 4:2:2, how can i make that happen? I've found myself more confused by googling the topic and have not been confident with the information I have found. Any help is greatly appreciated!

You're good with ProRes 422 HQ exports. The 422 in ProRes 422 stands for 4:2:2 color sampling. But I can't imagine a scenario where playback of the final video would depend on a specific method of color sampling. I would not worry too much about their specs and just give them a ProRes 422 GQ.

Apple ProRes HQ is 4:2:2 and cannot be changed to any other form of colour sampling.

The numbers refer to luminance (4) and two colour values (2:2) which average colours together to make the files smaller. ProRes 4444 doesn't do this colour averaging and also has an additional 'alpha' value for keying.

The luminance value is the Y in the spec and the other two values are the U and V that they mention but it's irrelevant as ProRes 422 HQ is what it is and cannot be changed.

They have asked you for ProRes 422 HQ so just select that when you export.

Ian.

I thought those numbers were suspiciously similar and was hoping that was the case. Thank you!
