Can two people share an external drive and FCPX library?

For years I have been using FCPX myself, but I have some new projects that I need to work on with another editor.

However, we don't need to work at the same time.

So, my question is, can I store the media and library on a fast external ssd drive and we can just share that drive when we need to work on the project?

I'm used to storing everything local and I'm afraid this will be really slow or there might be other hiccups I haven't thought about.

Thanks in advance,

Chris

Shouldn't be a problem. macOS formatted drive be with permissions to everybody.

Yes, should be pretty easy if you already have FCPX set up to store everything in the library. Otherwise be sure to consolidate the Library/Event first. And make sure the other editor does the same if he/she doesn't have FCPX set up to store things in the library. Then, only the Library itself needs to be on the drive.

Do you want to share the drive on a network or swap it between machines?

We will be swapping the hard drive and it sounds like it should be fine. I'm going to do a test this week-end.

Thanks everyone!

Be sure everything in that Library is Managed Media (stored inside the Library and consolidated), and you'll be fine. We do this often and don't have any issues. Never had to mess with drive permissions or anything. Make sure it's a USB 3.0 or T'bold SSD, and the only limitation will be the Mac itself.
