Hello.

I've got a big project. 4k 3 cameras. 5TB of footage. Okay, not that big but it fills up my Pegasus RAID so all other media and the library are on a separate drive.

All of the media is stored externally from the Library on this second drive. I generate proxies and they go to this external storage folder with all music, effects, gfx etc. etc.

So I need to hand over the project to another editor but I need to have a copy with just the proxies. He'll need the master 4k files. I copy the library and external media folder onto a new drive. I copy this in the finder NOT within FCPX.

He opens the library without the drive with the masters attached to his system. He only has the second drive with the library and external media folder with the proxies in etc.

NOTHING is online. No proxies. Nothing. He connects the drive with 4k masters. Relinks to 4k masters files. Proxies still don't appear. Please, please tell me where I went wrong!!!

Thanks in advance. James

Hi,
Your message is a little confusing, and a reread it a few times to make sure I'm not missing anything. So to clarify, your library is a 'lean' library and is pointed to a project folder on your RAID where all the media is stored (5 TB of footage and everything else). And you keep this lean library on yet a different drive, right? Or is that not right? It's super confusing because you say you have your media on your RAID in the first paragraph, and then in the second paragraph you say, "all of the media is stored externally from the library on this second drive." So does that mean you have a DUPE of this media also on a second drive apart from your RAID?

Please clarify this, because I'd love to help but I have a pretty muddy picture of your setup.

Ideally for sharing footage between editors (when you're not using shared storage), you'll want an identical dupe of all your media on two different drives. You can even name them the same thing so you don't have to relink when you're passing around the library. And by library, I mean it should be a lean library using externally managed media. Think of this sort of library like being a project file.

Is he clicking on the library in the browser and then in inspector clicking 'storage location', and selecting the external drive with all the media?

That should reconnect everything if the folders were structured right from the start.

Apologies for the delay in replying.

To be clearer.

Drive A - 4k Masters only

Drive B - FCPX Library + Media Folder. (No media the library. All media in media folder including proxies.)

I copy all of Drive B to Drive C and give drive C to my associate editor and he takes it home with along with Drive A.

He plugs Drive C into his machine. Opens the library. Directs the library to the media storage location when prompted. No Proxies are online!!

I'll try to workshop this issue when I have time. Any help very gratefully received. I think I should have copied the Library to drive C via FCPX rather than in the Finder.

Cheers

James

Is the Library pointing to any of that 4K stuff on drive A? Sounds like it is. Copying a Library via Finder is fine. But open it up on that Drive C with Drives A and B disconnected to test before sending it out to someone.
