Audio Edit Issue/Bug

Hi there: Definitely since the most recent update (and perhaps the previous on), often when I edit a clip with audio, on playback the edit point introduces a click or pop on playback. When I replay, the pop disappears--sometimes.

These artifacts also sometimes appear in the export final videos.

The edit point is introducing these artifacts in otherwise pristine audio tracks. It's also intermittent, which is frustrating.

Anyone else experiencing this?

Is this a multivcam clip? If not, quiet audio will quite commonly crate a faint click on the edit point. Add a short overlap and a quick fade to remove it.

Thanks. Not a mulitcam clip—but it is a compound clip.

I've got an interview clip inside a compound clip, because I'm apply a reflection plug in (which knocks out the background layer if it's not inside a compound clip).

That said, I've experience this audio pop issue in other projects that are just straight up single layer non-compound clips.

I have been experiencing this in some of the projects I have been working on. Doesn't seem to be any consistency as to when it happens. It is frustrating when you hear it, go back to check and it doesn't happen again on playback. So far (fingers crossed) this has not bled over into export issues for me.

Yeah, definitely frustrating. Obviously a recent bug because I've never had this problem in the past. Let's hope they fix it in the next update.

This is not a bug in FCP. It's been in digital video applications since the year dot. The problem is the audio is being cut own the frame line. Audio needs to be cut on the zero crossing point between two waves, otherwise in some sound, a noticeable click will be heard when the wave jumps. This was quite noticeable even before digital editing when cutting magnetic film. This is why audio editors always add short fades at the beginning and end of every piece of audio and overlap audio to smooth out sound transitions.

Hmm. What you say bespeaks your depth of knowledge.

As a work around, I'm making these cuts on areas where there is only silence--meters show flat/-60db. Still a noticeable pop. Never had this happen before so seem like a new FCPX issue.

Silence is the worst place to make a cut in this respect, though probably a good place editorially. In a recording there is no actual silence, and the quiet portions are the places where the audible click will be most noticeable,.

I do have a music track underneath, which helps.

But: if I make the cut in the middle of a word, no way to put in fades/handles to hide the pop, right?

Right. That's what I meant by editorial, silence is usually the place you want to cut, even if this makes the cut more difficult and makes the fades necessary.

Well what I'm doing is expanding the audio to a place past the cut and adding fades, and then doing the opposite move with the incoming clip and fades. Don't really recall ever having to do this before so either it's a bug or the compound clip or me.

I don't doubt what you have stated about the issue being how the clip is cut down the frame line but I have been editing a weekly broadcast for the last two years and have never run into this issue in FCPX until the update. That makes it hard for me not to mark it as a "bug". Also shouldn't it be reproducible every time I replay the cut if the way the cut is made is the issue?

Agreed--seems like a bug with the latest update. I've already sent a feedback report to Apple about it--you should too.
