Bug? Add keyframe makes playhead jump

Often, when I am keyframing in the timeline (for position usually), I select the clip I want to animate, place my playhead on the frame I want to add a keyframe and click + add keyframe in the inspector. Sometimes (alas, quite often) the playhead then jumps to a later part of the clip or even to the head (first frame) of my project.

It often persists so I have to set the keyframe elsewhere, adjust the settings and then drag the keyframe (using animation viewer) to where it should be). Very annoying!

Has anyone else encountered this behaviour or am I doing something wrong?
I can assure you that I am clicking the + add keyframe button and not the > goto next/previous keyframe button.

Thanks in advance for any thoughts.

This is not a common problem but we've seen it before. It's big problem on my system. I never know where the keyframe or the playhead is going to end up when I push that button.
It's not a preferences issue; I've cleared those many times.
It's not associated with a particular project, media type, or library; happens all the time.
Not associated with an OS or even the version of FCPX.; this was present in El Cap and FCPX 10.2 and is still there with Sierra and FCP 10.2+ (we have not yet updated to 10-.3).
My partner has never seen this glitch on his system, not ever, and he had a hard time believing me when I'd scream at my machine. till he saw it in action while he was trying to help edit on my system.
The keyframe animation editor lane does not need to be open.
The leap is almost always backwards in time, toward the head of the timeline. But not always.
Position and scale are the usual culprits so I tried to set a keyframe for the more obscure settings hoping that the glitch would not happen; no dice, it's completely predictable.
the playhead often leaps to the beginning of the show which is a tremendous pain because that could be 30 minutes away from where I'm working.

So, you're not alone but we are not common.

Its definitely one of the worst glitches. My business partner who uses Premiere and was wanting to try out FCPX, was enjoying it just fine until he saw the key framing in general......he wanted to run for the hills.

"What do you mean there is no keyframe editor in Final Cut????" He was flabbergasted. So I showed him the Video animation tabs but because you can't ramp and bezier on every keyframe....again, useless to him.

First time I was ever embarrassed to stand top for Final Cut. (But I still love it)

Nut back to the glitch. Yes....happens all the time. is infuriating. I have found myself adding keyframes in the video animation lanes instead. control V to open when a clip is selected. Works ok, not as precise but at least my playhead isn't jumping a minute down the timeline.

Somehow it helps to know I am not crazy and there are others experiencing this. Thanks for your replies.

Keyframing is the most embarrassing and neglected feature in FCPX and Apple doesn't seem to realize it. Here is your workaround for the "jump bug": Use the arrow keys to position the playhead where you want it in the timeline BEFORE you make a new keyframe. It won't jump. Even just going forward and back a single frame will do the trick. This bug used to be much worse on previous versions. In 10.3 it was improved, but it's still there. Honestly FCPX probably needs to be re-written from scratch with new code to get rid of bugs like these. Something Apple probably won't do.
