Cutting in from 4K footage on a 1080p timeline

Hi guys,

I posted on this and thought I had it resolved, but turns out I still can't figure it out.

I'm setting up a 1080p timeline. I'm then putting 4K footage in it. When I cut in 200%, the footage looks much less sharp. Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong?

I made this video to show the process i use:

The video setting is optimized, best quality.

Thanks to anyone who can help.

the pic IS sharp - unfortunately you haven't focussed on the protagonist, but on the background … ;)

on 200% this out-of-focus gets noticeable …

sorry for the bad news, … 4k is very unforgiven …
use in MF mode built-in-helps like display enlarge or focus peak
in AF, switch-on face-recognition = cam focusses on eyes

I don't even trust this, at least on my Sony A7RII. Its facial recognition can hunt from one face to the next within a group. For a tight shot on one person it works better, but if using shallow DOF it may not nail focus on their eyes.

Besides face recognition, some cameras (like the A7RII) have eye recognition, which detects the subject's eyes and focuses on that. Unfortunately with more than one person it just picks eyes at random, and it only works for still photos, not video.

We have had good results with AF on the Panasonic DVX200 but it uses a micro 4/3 sensor and the lens is f/4.5 on the long end, so DOF isn't super thin. But with full frame cameras and optically fast lenses, the DOF is just very thin and unforgiving. I haven't yet seen a video AF system I would totally trust in those cases.

Thank you.

I shot this on a Sony FS5, but used Canon Lens as it was low light and all my Sony lenses are outdoor lenses - meaning I had to use a Metabones, which basically kills all the facial detection features.

Peaking was on, but my camera guy was just useless.

Thanks again.

Peaking on/brain off - sorry, for making cheap jokes, superb example of German Schadenfreude …
… hard to ignore the yellow lines … (??)

I guess, for 4k, a larger ext. monitor comes in handy… I own an eBay-snap Lilliput, now my cam has just to learn hdmi output on recording :silly:

@Joe
didn't know about such a feature of 'eye detection' - … in my hobbyist habitat we have 'smile trigger' - hilarious!
