Import from drive with Camera Cards and folders

Import from drive with Camera Cards and folders was created by cog2803
I have an external drive on which I've copied the contents of P2 cards and SD cards using the Create Archive function from the import window of FCPX. Those are identified in the Finder "Get Info" section as Final Cut Camera Archive files and have the extension of .fcarch
On that same external drive I have many other folders that contain clips, jpegs, pngs, etc.
When I open the import window in FCPX, that drive shows up in the section under Cameras. I can't access any of the material that is inside those other folders to import.
Is the result that I need to keep and Final Cut Archive .fcarch files on a separate drive?

Archives don't do what you describe. There may be a folder with a name like PRIVATE or DCIM or some such that the application thinks is a camera drive.

Hi Cog
Without seeing a screenshot, it sounds like FCPX(?version) has defaulted to selecting the camera archive. FCPX sees the Archive and thinks you have a camera connected and want to import media from that camera. You can navigate to the other folders on your external drive in the Browser or you can drag and drop files from a Finder window into the Browser or folders/events etc… You should be given the choice of making a copy into your Library or "Leave files in Place".
There is also a Pop-up window that will only show Video Only clips or Video and Photos. This affects the Import selection that is available.
By the way, if you are using the Camera Archive, make sure to Import the media and let FCPX complete the import for your Project. FCPX does allow you to edit from the archive while importing in the background, but if it doesn't finish importing and you quit FCPX you will get the Missing Files warning when you open the Project again. You will also have to make sure any external drives with media are mounted before launching FCPX.
Finally, if the external drive was formatted a long time ago, there could be some issues with permissions, library structure, and FCPX may not recognize the files due to this. You can almost always drag and drop from Finder and in this case I recommend that you "Import files into Library" and not "Leave in Place" just to clear out any cruft.
There are other ways to get some of these files into FCPX, for example you can import the jpegs into Photos or Music into iTunes and they will become available via the media browser inside FCPX.
Hope this helps, Greg
