Media/Cache/Backups on SSD or hard disk?

Hey, I have a 2011 MacBook Pro, with:

- 1TB SSD for boot (around 300Gb free)
- 1TB SATA 2 hard disc in the caddy (around half-full)
- 8GB RAM

I'm aware it's long in the tooth, but does everything I've needed to until now.

I recently got a GoPro Session for Christmas, am off travelling and would like to use this for simple video editing with Final Cut Pro X. Just some nice home videos, a bit of slow motion, nothing fancy.

What's the best way of using my hard-drives?

I keep all my programs/OSX files on the SSD and my media (GoPro videos, iTunes and Photos) on the second hard drive.

I took a guess that media and backups should go on the hard disk, but placing the cache on the SSD would give me better performance?

Welcome, Alex, to fcp.co :)

theoretically for sure yes!

If you use one mechanical platter for streaming, I wouldn't 'burden' it to save/read tiny files occasionally … I like to recommend to visualise that 'arm' trembling across the spinning platter inside a HDD…

… but if you notice a performance boost … ;)
