Premier like sequences in FCPX?

Hi guys,

So just yesterday I made the move to FCPX from Premier (thanks to "this guy edits" on youtube) and various other recommendations.

One thing that I did like about Premier was being able to have my scenes in different sequences all within the one project and then just bring them all together in a main sequence. I loved flicking between the tabs and having a whole new timeline.

Is something like this possible in FCPX?

Hi Adam,

Welcome to the forums and to Final Cut Pro!

Sequences are called "Projects" in FCP X and yes, you can edit different scenes in different Projects and then assemble them all into a final Project. Just like in Premier you can open several Projects at the same time, and you can navigate between the open Projects on the timeline using the little arrows at the top left of the timeline.

If you are really new to FCP X, I would strongly advise you to get some basic online training before tackling any serious work, same as you would do when starting to work seriously with any kind of new software.

As you may know, FCP X has the largest user base and the friendliest user community in the professional NLE market. You will find a great wealth of information on this website, and if you have any further questions down the road we will be very happy to assist you.

Thanks Ronny for your fast and detailed response!

Yes i'm still using premier for company projects while trying to get up to speed with FCPX after hours.

Could you recommend a good online training program? I have been looking at the "Ripple training" porograms. Thoughts?

You've made the best decision, its akin to "once you go black you never go back"

Directly to the point, you want to learn about Compound Clips, which is how we "nest" things in FCPX.

I have a TV show that is in four segments. I have a Project for each segment. I create a fifth project called "Compiled" which is what I export to the control room engineer to air.

So, once my segments are edited and ready to go, in each of those Projects I "Select All" then Cmd-G to "Create New Compound Clip". Name it as per that segment. Now that CC exists in the Browser. And all copies of it are hard-linked together. I make change in one, it is reflected in all of them. (You can make a new Parent to break that link.)

I drop those CC's into my Compiled Project timeline, export, done!
