Smart transcoding... Selective transcoding

Smart transcoding... Selective transcoding was created by PhilCF
I bought a load of clips into FCPx optimised. They are too big to work with. I have built a timeline. Is there a way to only transcode the portions of clips in the TL? and not the entire source clips as held up in the browser?

No, you cannot transcode a fragment of a clip in FCPX or any other editor I have heard of.
You have several options:
(1) Create proxy, not optimized media. This takes a fraction of the size and makes editing performance a lot faster. Just remember to set the viewer to proxy and before the final export, set it back to optimized/original else it will export proxy resolution.
(2) Don't create proxy or optimized media. FCPX is fast enough on many machines to handle the native out-of-camera content. I think FCPX is actually editing a buffer of optimized media anyway.
(3) Transcode to optimized only the clips used on your timeline, which is typically a small fraction of the total clips. To do this, filter for used clips (CMD+F), then press + to add "used media", select those in the event browser and transcode to optimized.
