Has anyone ever design a vertical video (or someone who wants to chow a video/animation with a TV on its side in a shop window)?? just wondering what the best practices are to achieve it

I was heavily involved with digital signage a few years ago. We had lots of installations use LCD screens on their side (portrait mode so to speak). In FCPX and Motion we set up a "template" project for each. So rather than doing 1080x720, you make it 720x1080. We had a Theme called DS Portrait for all titles, generators, etc, created to fit that custom screen size. Sure wish they'd bring the Themes back to FCPX 10.3. I used it daily to save tons of time doing various TV shows.

Can you describe the rest of the workflow? Assuming you exported portrait videos were there special devices required to playback the content?

We were playing back using digital signage software that send signals to screens over Ethernet, and the displays that were in Portrait Mode has a control in their menu to do that. So if you're going out to just one screen, same thing, that display has to have a control built-in to tell it to show images in Portrait mode. Otherwise they'll just show sideways and skinny.

OR you could create a new Project in FCPX, with normal aspect ratio, make your original Project content a Compound Clip, drop that into the new Project, and rotate that CC on its side...

IN the olden days when displays were 4x3 CRTs, we produced vertical clips in a vertical composition using After Effects. We rendered out the movies and imported them sideways into Media 100, which could not do vertical programs. After editing and soundtrack production in Medi a100, we printed to Betacam or VHS. We played back from tape decks on location and just turned the Tv sets sideways.
Not easy but it was a fun exercise.

720x1080? No. That's a very odd 1.5:1 aspect ratio. 1080x1920. If you wanna go the 720p vertical route you can do 720x1280

1280, that's what I meant to type. My bad. Thanks for the correction.
