NVIDA CUDA Driver for MacOS 10.12.2

Hello wonderful people,

I just updated my iMac to MacOS 10.12.2 and I am seeing a message that a NVIDA CUDA update is required. I just check NVIDIA's website and they don't have a driver for MacOS 10.12.2 on their site. I chatted with their Live Support Techs and they say they don't have an update. Wouldn't NVIDIA have access the the Dev. version on 10.12.2 to test drivers?

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680MX

As of yet, NO drivers for the iMac for 10.12.2....Bad News!

Oh that's such a wacky system NVIDIA has, drives me insane. They're Mac drives are all kept to the side, I guess so they don't confuse them with the Windows drivers. Idiots...

That control panel is garbage, also. Half the time there's an update, it says there's not. When there really isn't, says there is. And they're not always included with the OS updates, like you'd think they would be. Hate it!

Here's what you're looking for.
www.nvidia.com/object/macosx-cuda-8.0.53-driver.html

Notice at the bottom, "An alternative method to download the latest CUDA driver is within Mac OS environment. Access the latest driver through System Preferences > Other > CUDA. Click 'Install CUDA Update'"

"Other"? Really? Someone show me an "Other" in the System Preferences. ugh..

Grumpy old man going back to work...

FYI, this JUST showed up on the mid-2010 Mac Pro here at our station, and is a Nov 2016 release, so yeah, that's what we want to install.

I never installed the CUDA driver on my Mac, I thought it was only beneficial for Adobe apps, and maybe games??

care to enlighten me?

Hmmm. You may be right. I better take another look! I remember reading somewhere in the docs that something like OPENCL was used. May be not CUDA.

I've always kept them updated. Other apps besides Adobe's use CUDA. I'd rather an up to date system, than one that lacks. Only takes 3 minutes.

Can you give me some apps for example?

Only reason I never installed CUDA was that never had an app that mentioned it, and I read that CUDA actually interferes with macOS drivers and can actually slow my work on most apps, especially FCPX

if you install CUDA can you enable and disable it without rebooting?

In all my years, I've never seen or hear of CUDA drivers interfering with anything. Would like to see evidence of such. Always kept our Macs up to date, never had issues. But they are there, it is a physical built-in fiction of the NVIDIA card, it isn't going away, you can't uninstall it. An app uses CUDA or not, decision of the developer. Update or not, your choice. Just giving information.

I don't have any evidence to offer, just remember reading on a forum or Facebook that CUDA caused crashes for someone with FCPX 10.3 and when he uninstalled or disabled it the problem was solved.

Just wondering if there's a point for me to install it or not, and if there's a way to know if an app I use actually uses CUDA.

Also if you have CUDA installed when you boot up are the Nvidia drivers loaded up instead os the macOS drivers?

found some more info

From Color Finale official website
"Final Cut Pro X crashes when Color Finale added to clip

If you have an Nvidia graphics card and you've installed driver from Nvidia website switch back to Apple native driver for using Color Finale."

I am so confused about CUDA, if it is meant to be there, why is it not being updated through the normal Apple update path? In fact I have not installed it on my macbook pro, late 2013 model, I am running Yosemite and Sierra and neither asked for it on install, and it is not listed on sys preferences.

Is it needed? Should I install it or carry on like Apple and ignore it?

It gets installed with Resolve, I think?

I keep getting the "update needed" in the control panel even though I have the latest installed. Irritating!

I believe this particular issue is specific to certain NVIDIA graphics cards on older Mac Pros. You probably won't see it on an iMac or laptop.

Don't think there's way to switch between them. You have a driver installed, or you don't. The Mac drivers, from my information, are the Mac drivers. Are you having issues at the moment?
