Some thoughts after using FCPX for two years and with a long IT-background.
My biggest library is 2.5 TB with 3h event and three cameras. I'm the only editor, I store it on a local RAID disk, with NAS backup every hour via TIme Machine.
Every card imported is stored in a separate event and I use metadata to structure the clips with keywords and smart collections.
Why? As a lot of cameras doesn't handle filenames very well, I prefer to have each copied card in a separete folder and import or link to that folder. Then I use rename clips within FCPX to give each file a unquie name in the NLE. But the structure of orginal filenames and folders are untouched. When there is crasch, it's hopefully easier to restore individual material.
I then create one event for each film in the same library as the footage.
I would not use a normal server or NAS for editing in FCP/X due to application behaviour and bandwith.
By the way, normal insurances doesn't cover dataloss. That could be a good point to your sponsors.
