Best Way to Listen to Interviews

Most of the material I edit with is Sony XDCam footage. This automatically comes with 8 audio channels from the camera.

I only ever need Channel 1 (main mic) for Interviews and Channel 2 (top mic) for Effects/Nat Sound.

When listening to interviews either in the Browser or on the Timeline, I always have to listen to both channels at the same time. But I only want to hear the best sound (Channel 1) for the actual interview as Channel 2 is distracting.

Is there an easy way to listen to just Channel 1 in the Browser?

On the Timeline, is there a better/quicker way to listen to Channel 1 than having to highlight a clip(s) and then untick all the other audio channels you don't want?

In the past, I've done this for some clips and then later swapped a clip for another and then forgotten to untick the other audio I don't want.

This just seems slow and clunky, so wondered whether there's a better and more efficient way of working?

Thanks

Looking at this again, now in 10.3, it would seem assigning the audio roles and what channels you want to use for all your clips (both interviews and effects) straight after import would be the best/most efficient method?

Select clip in Browser.
Go to Audio section of Inspector.
Go to the Channel Configuration section.
Configure for mono channels.
Click an individual channel and play it by itself.

When you import from now on, you may want to enable "Separate stereo/mono" and "Remove Silence" or however it is worded. Then half your work is done there. Dislike channels are configured by default as mono, silent channels are muted (not really removed).

We do lots of interviews for a couple of educational shows we produce. We record two folks on one camera. During import, "Separate stereo/mono" does half our work for us. We created an audio Parent Role called "Interviews". Then we assign "Host" and "Guest" and "Dead Interview" sub-roles. "Dead Interview" is for any channel on any camera that shot the interview, but has no usable audio on it. Actually helps a great deal. So you're on the right path, man!
