The fun of selecting clips and moving them around

Alright I am quite embarrassed for this question but I am actually having a hard time moving clips around in FCPX.
So I’ve got plenty of connected clips which I want to move around. Nothing going on in the primary story line so forget about it. This is all about connected clips. Now I’ve got connected clips which are also Storylines. SO when I lasso select ALL MY CLIPS I do NOT select the Storylines BUT the clips inside the Storylines which makes moving the entire bunch of clips+Storylines IMPOSSIBLE. Now I know I can SHIFT CLICK on each object (each clip and each storyline) to add those to my selection and THEN I can move those around. This takes WAY TOO MUCH TIME and is quite annoying. So what am I doing wrong? How do I simply select clips+storylines and move them around?

Thanks a lot. Yes I know the position tool ;)

You can click in the grey bar that encompasses the clips in your secondary storyline (just click slightly above one of your clips in the secondary storyline). A yellow marquee will be drawn around the secondary storyline to indicate that it is selected. As long as you grab the secondary storyline in this grey area you will be able to move it around.
Use CMD click to select non-contiguous clips and/or storylines
Hope this answers your question.

Dear rjvddoes, I am very well aware of this unless I mistake you. If I want to select a secondary story line I will have to click ABOVE IT- I know that STILL I can NOT lasso around it. So say I have 20 secondary story lines that means I will have to click 20 TIMES! That takes A LOT OF TIME compared to drawing a lasso around my clips. It works for single clips. SO THAT is my problem.

If they need to stay in sync, select them all, make them one single storyline. Or a Compound Clip.

Have you tried SELECT ALL (command + A) and then Command-clicking the primary storyline to deselect it?

That only selects every clip but it wont select a story line. Only the clips INSIDE a story line.

About nesting it. Very complicated: I just want to move stuff like in any other NLE. If I nest it I would have to "unnest" it again because I want to do changes and edits in the main time line. Really I just want to move everything around where I want to.

Of course the answer is the same as usual: you can't in FCPX. If you don't find anything in FCPX it simply means it doesn't exist. FCPX doesn't have any hidden or secret features (besides unlink/break connection shortcut nobody tells you about).
FCP Hacks doesn't fix that either, right?

Wish someone could code an extension or something so that I could properly select and move stuff around. I would pay 50 USD for it.

Solution: Find the right clips and story lines in the index - select those - do NOT select something like a dissolve inside a story line because that will mess things up and then move everything.
Depending on the order of the clips in the index it can be quite fast or really annoying as well. A proper lasso feature is still desired.

FCP certainly offers a solution, but you need to think what you REALLY want to do.

Generally, if you move a clip on the timeline, the storyline will just move with it – no need to select it. Keeping things „in sync“ is one of the huge and unique advantages of FCP. Selecting all clips of a sequence then just takes using lasso for the clips on the timeline and moving them – done.

If you want to test how changes of sequences look, you could also creat Compound Clips for each sequence and move them around. Advantage: You can also read the name of the sequence in the timeline (but naming the compound clips properly).

If you do not want to move clips which are considered to be a sequence, what are you trying to do? (Just trying to understand what purpose your edit shell follow.)

I don’t want to move the story line. I hardly ever use the story line. I think the story line is a great invention and I like it but it gets hardly used for my purposes.
In this case I have 30 second long sound clip that should stay exactly where it is. I’ve made 25 different clips aka different video footage ALL with the same audio clip so the song is my primary story line because I didn’t want to move it around / didn’t want it to get deleted when I remove my footage that is connected to it and all those other things. You could suggest I simply connect the song to the very first clip BUT like I said I have 25 time lines / independent films so I would have to add it new each time also I like to puzzle my video footage around and moving the song along is annoying as well. I first had a complete slug in the primer but then I just lifted the song to the primer because that thing is important to me.

Not sure what you mean when you say "films" or "time lines".

If you want to move a clip in the Primary Storyline, and leave its connected clip in place, hold the tilde/grave key. ~
That performs a connection override.

I agree with wordloop, we need a screenshot to understand what this is about.

This is how I edit to music:
> I copy the song to the timeline with q (gets connected to a slug the length of the audio)
> I make the slug and the song a connected clip with alt g immediately (protects the connection)
> I edit with q exclusively - if no camera audio is needed I hit shift 2 before, because:
> to "lock" good parts in place, I lasso the connected clips and move them to the storyline with alt cmd down
> if I decide later that sth needs to be rearranged, I "free" the clips with alt cmd up

What I don't get is the need to create secondary storylines. Transitions between connected clips?
