3D animated travel map

How to I make a 3D animated travel map like the Tour de France route introdution?

I guess I need some kind of map package?
How do I even do I make a travel map by the use of google maps? Is it as easy as just make a line and use keyframing?

I've done something similar before, using my OS X's 3D map, an animated line in Motion (keyframe Last Point parameter), and the Bump Map filter to fake the texture. Not exactly what this example shows, more crude (broadcast never allows enough time to do things correctly), but it can be done. I'm sure others hear can fill in the details of such a project.

The Ripple Twins put up a nice piece a year or more ago that showed how to use the travel map that is in iMovie in either FCPX or Motion, cannot recall. The iMovie map is primitive but it was a neat trick.

If you need exquisite 3D maps, hire it out. Learning a 3D app is a monstrous waste of a creative mind's time unless, of course, you are expecting to offer that service to your clients.
