Hi Alfredo, welcome to the forums.

What kind of footage are you working with? 4K or HD?

Without knowing specifics, I'll throw this in. I have a USB 3.0 bus powered drive (OWC) that I use for HD, bringing it back and forth from the broadcast station to my home studio, and it works great. These are sizable Libraries with over a dozen Projects in them. 4K I can edit with, but very jittery playback, even when rendered. But not so bad I can't get a lot of work done.

I also have an SSD T'bolt bus powered drive, and it has next to no issues with 4K footage.

I tried a 4K in an HD multicam on a RAID system ONCE, and since then, we do proxies for the 4K multicam on a RAID.

So yeah, what resolution and codec the originals are, really matters.

Thank you very much for your answers and I apologize for my bad english.
I record with a sony rx10 camera in full hd: avchd (h 264) 1920 x 1080p. 28 Mbps. Sometimes I've tried the format xavc-s also in full hd, but I can't see any improvement in these very large files.
I have an imac 27 late 2012 (i5, 3,2 Ghz) The OS and programs are in a external ssd thunderbolt and my media (ORIGINAL y OPTIMIZED final cut pro files) are in my internal hard disk user folder. But the problem is this hard disk is already half full, so I have two options:
- to change the internal hard disk by another of more capacity (maybe 3 TB)
- to buy an external hard disk, and if so, what do you recomend me ( usb 3.0, thunderbolt, 5200 or 7200 rpm)
Thanks in advance and I hope your expert advice.

Hi Buriles
First why do you have your " OS and programs are in a external ssd thunderbolt and my media (ORIGINAL y OPTIMIZED final cut pro files) are in my internal hard disk user folder."
IMHO this is the exact opposite of what you want. Your OS and apps should be on your internal boot drive and your media should be stored on your external drive.
This provides faster system processor speeds, is faster for FCPX and other apps and uses less RAM and provides better CPU-GPU communications.
Putting the media files on the external drive will allow greater storage with little likelihood of filling up and easy to increase space if it does.
The only time I use an external drive for boot purposes is when testing a new OS or having to revert to an older one for past outdated projects and apps.

For the type of media codecs and usage you listed you can use either USB3 or TB external drives neither will be a bottle neck. If you choose to use USB3, get a device that supports UASP for the fastest transfer speeds.

Hope this helps, Greg

I'm probably wrong.
I wanted to increase the performance and speed in OS and programs, but I couldn't put an internal ssd because mi iMac was under warranty, so I put them in an external ssd thunderbolt, and to take advantage of the internal hard disk I use it for storage media.
I thought that it is a good solution, but evidently it was not. I would appreciate your advices, and then would be fast enough
an USB3 external drive for storage the optimized and original media?
Thanks in advance.
