Hi all.

Larry Jordan demonstrated a disolve that seems to magically eliminate a jump cut (if cutting from an interview or such) and I can't find it. I just wanted to dee if that actually works. Sounds to good to be true!

Anyone know where that is?
Thanks.

It's called Flow in the Dissolves category.

Well somehow it worked better for Larry.

Just tried to use it on a few different cuts, tried all the options in the inspector (there is not many) but I still get a jump. Really impressive on Larry's Webinar though!

The incoming and outgoing shots need to be similar enough for it to work properly. The subject's head cannot be drastically turned or tilted or shifted after the cut. Not sure of this works with Apple's Flow Dissolve, but with mMorphCut you can slightly blow up and reposition/scale the two shots to make them match better. You add a dissolve and then use the Transform tool (with the playback head parked in the middle of the dissolve) to nudge one of the shots so that the key elements match as close as possible (usually eyes and mouth). This has vastly improved some mMorphCuts for me that didn't work.

Thanks smg.

The clip I was testing was a pretty much a front on shot. I'll test this some more another time.

I found the same thing with little way of changing anything in the Inspector.
I was then told, via this forum, to double click the Timecode box or use Ctrl-D to change the length of the transition.
Have a play with this, but I found around 6-10 frames works a lot better than say 2 seconds.
I've watched a couple of online videos and there was no mention of this...
Hope that helps!

Our studios have tested this extensively. Between 6 and 12 frames will give the best results, depending on content. Over 12 frames, again depending on content, could make a special effect transition.

Also, we found background movement is frozen during the transition. It takes a frame from the outgoing clip, and a frame from the incoming clip, and does a morph between them. In our testing we found water fountains, movement out of a car window, and trees waving in the wind all froze during the transition. So shots with NO movement in the background are BEST.

Our three studio rules for the new "Flow" transition, based on lots and lots of testing with it:
1- Between 6 and 12 frames, no exceptions.
2- No background movement, or as little as possible.
3- Use only when necessary (over use gets obvious and destroys a good monologue).
