Easily make Library copy with only Proxy files? was created by bradywurtz
Anyone know an easy way of doing this? I typically work off my hard drive at my home that had my original, proxy, and optimized media on it. However, every once in a while I wanna take my project on the go with my laptop. I don't want to risk taking my large hard drive, and I don't want to take my back up hard drive either, so it would be nice to take just a small USB 3.0 hard drive with me to edit. But it takes to much space to copy the whole library, so it would be nice to just make a second copy of the library that just has the proxy files and not the optimized or original files. That way I can just do simple edits on the go with a library that doesn't take up much space.
Then when I get home, I can just replace the project files inside the bundle and it should all update on my main computer to the edits I made on my laptop on the go, and then I can switch over to optimized or original media.
Is there an easier way to do this other than me making a complete copy of the library onto a second hard drive, -'d then going into the bundle and deleting the optimized and original?

To my knowledge when working with media in external folders there is no easier way.
One way is to offline the source files and consolidate after that. Another way is to relink proxy media.
I wrote a little script that will relink proxies. Will post it when it´s thoroughly tested but probably not before december...
I already sent a fetaure request to consolidate only proxy media.

- Create a new Library on the portable drive.
- Highlight all necessary Events in your current Library together.
- File > Copy Events To Library > (select the open Library to copy them to)
- You will be promoted to include Optimized and/or proxy media.
Only drawback is, it retains original media, because that can't be replicated from nothing. So why not just use the original media, and no optimized or proxy media?

Main reason i just want proxy is because my laptop is an older MacBook Pro (early 2007 i think?), so editing the proxy files makes it a lot more manageable.
Other thing is, I'm editing a project, and when i'm at the point of taking it on the go, i'm usually down to just editing with X amount of clips. So i don't even need to take ALL the footage with me, just the proxy's that are in the current timeline.
I wish there was a feature called 'on the go' or something, where you could just say 'i want to take this specific Project on the go.' And have it let you create a 'To Go' bundle, that will only include the specific Projects, or specific Events, and it will let you only take the files that are being used in the Project, and choose to only take the Proxy files. And then have a way to easily bring it back into your original Library, but have it updated to your edits.

In my case the original media is +- 10TB.
And if I´m not mistaken it only works with a managed library...
Edit:
(Answer to Ben´s suggestion)

No warranty for the below (since I haven't done that forever)
First the original media have to be outside the library.
Then generate proxies to be kept inside the library.
Problems are stills (and image sequences) since no proxies will be generated. And as always 4444 files since they loose the last 4.

This Ripple Training tutorial should help you with your problem.
Ripple Training demonstrate a workflow for taking a project from your editing suite out on the road and back again by taking advantage of proxy media.

that is helpful, but my typical workflow isn't to save my original files outside of my Library. I always import my original files into my Library, so this workflow doesn't apply to me i guess

One thing not to forget with all this:
Since FCPX down´t offer a "Force Relink" there is always a slight possibility of loosing connection to some original clips with these workarounds.
Fortunately it hasn´t happened to me in a long time so perhaps something has improved under the hood...
And I don´t understand why FCPX isn´t offering the possibility to consolidate only proxy files. The OP´s request t take along some part of a bigger library is quite common, isn´t it?
The ripple training works very well in a lot of cases but only with an entire + managed library with source files in external folders.
Probably perfect for most use cases but certainly not all.

Well then Just duplicate the library, manually erase the original media files from inside the library through the finder, and copy that much smaller library to your small drive.
p.s.
To do it faster, and to save Space, don't duplicate the Library in the Finder, but Duplicate it in FCPX
