Before Sierra, when I put the viewer on my MacBook Pro's built in screen and timeline, browser etc on my external monitor, next time I opened FCPX the window layout was the same as I left it. After Sierra, everytime I open FCPX the viewer is on my external monitor and the rest is on the MacBook Pro's built in screen. So I have to start with rearranging and resizing the windows... Was hoping this would have been fixed in 10.3 but sadly it isn't. Creating workspaces doesn't work either.
Have obviously trashed preferences and all that.
I'm using an older monitor connected via Thunderbolt to DVI adapter.

Francisco,

Your link is dead - goes to 404 page ("not found").
Concerning putting part of the interface on a second display: you should set once and for all which of your displays is to be the "main" display. This is done in System Preferences->Displays->Arrangement.
Drag the menu bar representation to the display you want to be the main display.

Well, problem is that I want the MacBook's display to be the main display ALWAYS... But I want FCPX to be able to remember what I put on which display... It worked fine before Sierra... So obviously Sierra changed something so I guess they need to put something in FCPX to override that. Also, why isn't workspaces letting me save setups where the viewer is on the "main" display? That's just retarded and severe limitation of the function then...lichinho wrote: Concerning putting part of the interface on a second display: you should set once and for all which of your displays is to be the "main" display. I tried creating a workspace as per your description, and it worked.
My rMBP screen is the main display, I put FCP X on the external and viewer on my rMBP.
Quitting and restarting FCP X returns me to the same workspace, and the viewer is on the display that I chose, every time.
Do you have the menu bar on only one or in both displays?
I have it on both (System Preferences->Mission Control, "Displays have Separate Spaces" is CHECKED).
If you don't, then maybe that explains the different behavior.
You may try checking the above mentioned box (note: you need to log out back in for the setting to take effect).

What kind of display do you have? And are you on Sierra?

I am on Sierra and FCP X 10.3. My second monitor is an older iMac connected by Thunderbolt.

Mine is an old DVI display connected via the Thunderbolt to DVI adapter... mayebe that has something to do with it... But was working fine prior to Sierra...

You can do it with some iMacs (since about 2010, not exactly sure; but NOT the Retina ones) with an appropriate cable (miniDP or Thunderbolt, depending on model). Mine is a 2011 one.
With the cable connected, just pressing Command-F2 on the iMac keyboard switches between its own screen and working as external display for another mac.
I would not think that the monitor or connection should be an issue, but I suggest a possible workaround: as you have the menu bar on both screens, establishing one of them as the "main" screen is not that signficant. It does not affect the menu bar OR the Dock, so it really does not matter. So I suggest you try designating the DVI screen as your main display and see if it sticks that way. You are unlikely to experience any difference in other applications whatsoever, but FCP X seems to be opting for your main screen for the main part of its interface, so...

If I go to System Prefs -> Displays -> Arrangement, I can drag the menu bar from one of the screens to the other, is that it? But then all the external harddrives etc are shown on the second screen etc... So it is affecting things... more than I'd like...

Another oddity was, when I had the everything on the second display and tried to switch to the pre-made Workspace called "dual displays" the screen just went black and I had to force quit FCPX...
Definitely something funky going on in Sierra!
