Folks I still battle wit duplicate clips created when moving between two libraries that are identical; one on my work computer and one on my portable drive.
After scouring many message boards and speaking with folks on some of them, I still have no solution in taming this FCP X issue.
I've resolved to moving events rather than the project or importing XML because it's been more reliable in controlling the duplicates, triplicates, multiples of the same clip, etc. Moving updated versions of projects between libraries and importing XMLs still gives me multiples of the same clip.
WHAT IS NEEDED IS:
A consolidate or merge clips feature that can recognize that there are multiples of the same clips in the browser and by 'same' I mean that all of the format information of the clip is identical; show in the meta data too.
What often prevents me from deleting these duplicates is the "clip in use" issue. Perhaps it's because each clip has a unique ID, I am not sure. When I see duplicates I try to not use them and only use the original. However when moving between identical libraries that original becomes a duplicate in the other library and can no longer be deleted.
I've tried a transfer event as well. Works like my other events. Still get duplicates.
I have to believe that somewhere I am doing something fundamentally wrong though I've tried, experimented and tested with various workflows to alleviate this issue.
I do wonder if when copying events and/or projects between libraries does FCP X take what it needs to fulfill the project edit that does not exist in the identical library.
Maybe today we get an update to FCP X 3 - not sure.
I'd be happy with:
Better clip management
Batch syncing (like other NLEs)
And Color Finale baked into FCP X (I know that's not happening).
...For starters

Dear Tangierc,
I have the same issues, have you found some solution?
