Moving Audio in timeline

For a lot of projects that I do I throw down a minute or two background track to get the feel of the edit. After working for a little while and getting closer to the final edit duration I usually end up wanting to move my track towards the beginning of the timeline to line up the end of my background track to the end of the video (which is usually shorter). Unfortunately because an audio track cannot extend before 00:00;00 I have to shorten the track beginning, drag the track where i want it and the extend it out again. I'm curious if there is a way to have the track do this automatically when it hits the beginning of the timeline or some other way I should go about doing this.

Hi Nick,

You cannot drag any clips beyond the start of the timeline, and that's not only in FCP X.

The way you work is fast and precise, I don't see what's wrong with that. But if you really want to try it in a different way:

Put a marker on your audio clip where you want the audio to start.
Drag the entire clip to the start of your timeline.
Press "T" and drag inside the clip until your marker is at the start of your timeline.

Just press Command + A to Select all.

Then press P to select whatever tool it selects. I forget what it's called.

Move everything forward a few seconds. A gap clip will appear ahead of the project.

Press A again to get out of P mode.

Move your audio where you want it.

Decrease any gap that doesn't need to be there.

Buy lottery ticket.

Win.

Retire.

P - Position Tool, overrides magnetic timeline functions.
A - Arrow Tool, or was Apple calls it, the Select Tool, because A stands for Select. What? Maybe it is A for Automatic, cause the magnetic timeline functions automatically do stuff. Who knows. I just always called it "Arrow" cause that's what it look like, and it's key is "A". Or A 7th minor in come circles.

I assume, I miss the problem here but....

extend your 'temp' audio to the length of the Project (or clip)
hit shift-F to find the source
hold X and click to select all of the source
drag onto audio in timeline and choose 'replace from end'
(you can create your own keyboard shortcut for that)

no?
