backup method with separated library and media was created by schloerg
Hi
I had the idea of a nice backup method.
In FCPX move all media from the library out to a separat folder. So you have the library-file, which is small (2GB), and the media folder, which is big (1.5TB).
Now you can copy the media folder to different separat disks and you have as many backups as you want to (4-5 in different places) .
You work on your projekt and backup the small library on two or three usb sticks.
But here comes the point:
when you copy and replace that updated library-folder to one of your backup-discs, it will not connect to the media on the disc, even if you have the exact same file structure. All media will be shown as unconnected.
The library file will always and only point to the drive and the media you created it with.
Is there anyone who can tell me how to make this work?
best regards
Schloerg

"Relinking" is what you are probably looking for.
Choose all your files in the event browser and go to the File/Relink Files... menu.

Did you try what I mentioned.
Relinking will only point to a new location for the source files, no matter the size.
You can chose between relinking only missing files and all files.
My biggest library is +-20TB on several drives.
Regarding you backup strategy:
It´s quite normal to have the media files outside the library.
I don´t have any "Managed Libraries" (where the source files are copied into the library bundle) I only work with external files.
When you create a new library you can chose to keep the media files external or internal
And if you delete all render files you can even shrink the backup further...
I would suggest googling:
relinking media files
and
library managament for FCPX

I found out myself about this backup method:
you can do the backups as I described in the first post. When you than copy the updated llibrary to one of your backup-discs, you have to give this disc the exact same name as the disc has where you copied the library from. Given the same name all files will sync again. After you have opened the library on the backup-disc once and all files are in sync, you can than give the disk another name. I don't know the reason for this, but this is how it works.
