Hey guys

Anybody else having issue when using Neat Video 4.2 in FCPX? Whenever I use it my Mac tends to Freeze. I'm using it on a late 2012 iMac, Quad 3.4GHz i7, 32GB RAM and a GeForce GTX 680MX 2GB.

Cheers

Is it the entire Mac freezes or just FCPX hangs for a while? Neat Video is very CPU intensive and apparently the current FCPX plugin architecture does not let the plugin control when rendering is invoked: www.neatvideo.com/nvforum/viewtopic.php?...b9cefca61253dba69fe9

Ideally any plugin CPU activity should take place separate from the main FCPX UI loop. IOW FCPX should be designed so all plugin activity is asynchronous with respect to user input and screen output. However it appears that is not the case, so very CPU-intensive plugins can hang the interface for certain periods.

This is similar to how OS/2, MacOS and Windows were designed prior to Windows NT. There was a synchronous input queue and any malfunctioning app could hang the entire UI.

For this reason I suggest deferring use of Neat Video or similar plugins to the very last step, after all editing is done and all other effects are applied.

Hi Joema

It's the entire Mac that locks up. Interesting that you mention the render thing cause most of the time it locks up after I render the clip in the timeline. Most of the time I don't render in the timeline now when I apply Neat Video.

Yes I always leave the noise reduction to last.

Hopefully in the future this problem is resolved.

The entire Mac should *never* lock up. Each process is in a protected address space. In general if the operating system irrevocably locks up or crashes it is a fault in the OS or hardware. It is not something an application developer could fix and normally is pursued as an OS, hardware or configuration issue.

I suggest these steps:

(1) Make sure everything on your Mac is backed up.
(2) Verify you have sufficient disk space on all drives
(3) Run Apple Diagnostics: support.apple.com/en-us/HT202731
(4) Run Disk Utility repair on all drives

After the above steps try Neat Video again. If it still hangs the OS:

(5) Run a CPU stress program. This should be safe but run at your own discretion: osxdaily.com/2012/10/02/stress-test-mac-cpu/
(6) Run a disk I/O stress program on each volume for at least 10 min. BlackMagic is not the greatest stress program but at least it's free: itunes.apple.com/us/app/blackmagic-disk-...st/id425264550?mt=12

If any of those produce an error, or an OS hang or crash, you'll need to contact Apple or some 3rd party support provider.

Thanks for that Joe. I'll try all that when I get a chance and let you know how I go.
