It really does depend on the context, but in a dog eat dog world. If it takes you longer than the next person to create a piece of work that is roughly equivalent in quality, then the faster person will almost always get the job. It's just the way commercialism works.

So it pays to learn tricks and techniques that helps us to cut down time where feasible just to stay competitive. What's more is you can allocate that extra time into something more creative that will set your work apart. That's how the famous editors get sought after. They just learned to be smart with their time and use anything and everything around them to help achieve that process.

Of course, not everyone is as interested in being on the forefront.

This is a vlog, the OP asked about a better method, and so on, there is to date as far as anyone posting on this topic here on fcp.co knows, there is no better method than old school, and this is slower or maybe faster, hard to tell than doing it tape to tape, maybe faster than tape to tape.

It is a damn sight faster than fcp7, that is for damn sure, look it is what it is, maybe in the world of commercials it may be different, I don't know, I know that on FCPX it is way fast of you develop a skill, when I first started editing on betacam, and dvcpro, it was a slow process, having to watch what buttons I press, after a short period, I would be so fast, I would often be ready before the machine was, and not have to watch my fingers...

That is the point, it is in the doing of the thing, the skill develops, in this case, the more you do, the faster you get, you also get to learn how to read the waveform, to be faster, to know what is on the waveform, eyes are faster than ears...

As a tv news video editor, I would watch the source tapes, I learned to know the tapes, so that at the time of editing, I would be able to recall what shot is where, or in relation to what.

In this case, as he is ranging, he is learning the audio, what is where, the brain/memory is fantastic and can remember way more than you think it does.

If the OP wants to get fast, just keep doing, the speed will come, same as driving, when I was learning to drive, I would have to look down for the gear lever, now I do not have to, in the doing, I learned what is where, it became "2nd nature" and this will be true, I have seen editors recall keys and short cuts, I am only able to dream about, why, they do it way way more than I do....muscle memory.

Yeah but justvtelling someone to do it faster isn't that helpful.

It may be the only way in this case, but exploring scripting ideas, as an example, may be more fruitful. Not just to them but any other encountering this post in search of a similar solution.

Yes it is just a vlog, but that doesn't mean I'm going to outright dismiss it as something not important or with exploring faster workflows.

Still considering doing it for 2 hours with of footage, it would take you much longer to splice out the dead air. It could take you maybe 3 hours, especially if there are lots of silences. So you could spend 3 hours doing that or conceivable run a script and have bought yourself 3 hours to refine and polish it, maybe spend more time grading it. Just doing something more visible that client can see and appreciate where their money has been spent. It's psychology really.

I don't say this disrespectfully, I say this because it's the nature of the world we live in now and it goes far beyond a simple vlog edit. Speed and workflow will always be an issue to those doing it professionally.

It may turn out there is no faster way than a straight out edit, well that's fine too. At least we've taken the time to explore the possibility and not just shut it down with a "just do it faster" mentality.

… Voice activation may not be quick enough to catch the opening transient or the first word which may lead to audible problems …

… there is to date as far as anyone posting on this topic here on fcp.co knows, there is no better method than old school, and this is slower or maybe faster, hard to tell than doing it tape to tape, maybe faster than tape to tape. …

my goodness, what date do we have? 1985? Tape? Voice activating??

Most consumer level cams offer pre-record, our football-coaches use on their phones 5.99 apps, recording the 30sec BEFORE you hit the record button.

Not to forget meta-recording, hasn't to be Top Dog Lumberjack (adjustable pre-roll), 5€ app Apogee MetaRecorder I use allows to set Markers too, which import perfectly to FCPX... so, any time the OP opens his mouth, an unobtrusive tap on the tablet and pre-editing is done WHILE recording...

But the question wasn't 'best/fastest/most convenient practice', but some post 'effect' ... and I'm not aware of any. But my workflow makes such tinkering obsolete …

Logic Pro X has a tool that does this, deletes quiet sections.

It's called Strip Silence, but doesn't work with vid. Still, a tool like that could perceivably be handy in an NLE, would be great for the ingest phase.

I only export my audio as an AIFF and take that into Logic. Then take it back to FCPX. I have great success with it.

The OP:
I use FCPX to create vlogs. Usually, I cut out the video areas in which I'm not talking, in which the audio is zero. This, however, takes hours of work, just scrolling and trimming out the areas with no sound. Is there any automatic way of doing so? Selecting and deleting the quite areas?

As Msjustine has pointed out, editing is work.

If you are smarter than the average common core maths teacher, then you will figure out editing happens during the shoot, not in post...

If you cannot edit during shooting, ie, using lumberjack, or such, then sorry but you have to spend time doing grudge work pre-editing...

Once you get a few vlogs done, you will start to notice patterns, and your fingers will become used to the same buttons, it takes time, but this is a very important point, the more you do, the better you will be...

Like dressing yourself, tying shoelaces, driving, everything takes time, the more you do the better, so really this notion it takes "hours" I simply refuse to accept as truth. I will say it will take time, yes, but hours...no way, sorry not buying it.

How long is this vlog? 24 hours???? You can see on the waveform where there is a drop in levels, I O delete [so you see the red line], l to play, i o delete then l simple, it is fast, all the keys are close, if need be, buy an extended mac keyboard, map the numneric keys to the same, all one hand, job done.

Hours, sorry no!!!

I've never seen a plugin to do that, but it's a very cool idea. If your really keen you could develop something yourself. Its quite complex to do in fcp through the fxplug sdk, but if you have access to premiere check out the adobe extendscript toolkit www.adobe.com/uk/products/extendscript-toolkit.html . Its quite powerful for these sorts of jobs and fairly easy to get started with.
