Aesthetic assistance with titles / 3D text

Weird question, but does anyone know of any great tutorials that teach the more aesthetic side of titling / 3D text.

Obviously, typography, colour selection, materials etc all play a key role in how the finished text will look.

There are so many options and combinations in FCPX and I often get a bit overwhelmed by the choice when they combine on each other. My eyes just can't tell me what looks good.

All over the web I read "just play about" - but that is more to do with the tools - which are quite simple. The much harder part is actually working out what looks good.

I was wondering if anyone knew of any great tutorials that cover this or help out with this. I guess this could either be FCP specific or tutorials on text in any digital realm that could then be used for ideas in FCPX.

Thank you,
x

on risiking a fundamental debate 'European overly intellectual vs. American Just Do It"…
Typography is a many years field of university study. Nothing a web-tut can cover in under 5 minutes.

Plus, aesthetics is a minefield: what I like is your worse…

And, finally, talent, not everybody is a Neville Brody, hero of my youth conc. typography.

For a more practical approach: steal.
Collect sites/pics/examples you like. And rebuild them.
Typography has its roots many hundred years ago, but has developed fast the last 20, 30 years, as an example: adding the dimension Time into it, Kinetic Typography…

I'm actually in the making of a plugin, which emulates the looks of car logos of the 50ies (underrated how difficult that is!), … by rebuilding existing best-practice you learn a lot.

Find the looks... Then emulate. Sage advice. Thank you.

Good luck on your Plug in :)
