I'm having trouble importing FS5 files in to FCPX, some import ok others give errors, and I would prefer to convert them to prores before importing. Which is the best convertor software to use?

When I have to transcode my XAVC footage into Prores422 I just use DaVinci Resolve. It's free and if you want then you can drop a LUT (or just do a quick "1 light" color correction) on the shots before exporting.
Luckily I've never had any trouble working with the XAVC footage from my F55 in FCPX so it's only when someone else needs to work with them in a different NLE.

If you're current in FS5 firmware and FCPX on 10.2.3 you shouldn't have issues importing FS5 files. You may want to investigate the problem. That would require you posting more details. Personally I find it best to use FCPX to create a Camera Archive first and then import from that.

I've not had any problems importing FS5 files into FCPX either. So, as suggested, check if you're running the current version, etc.

If you're importing directly from the cards, my first instinct would be to check the integrity of the media and the media reader.
