From FCPX to DCP?

From FCPX to DCP? was created by Navigator
Last summer we went for a motorbike trip with 10 guys and 10 bikes and visited 6 countries. We covered this trip with footage from the Canon XF100, DJI Phantom 3 Advanced and the GoPro 4+ black. All full HD, 60fps.

We have now a 75 minute film, about 150gb. We want to rent a 100-seat cinema to run the movie for friends and family.

The cinema asked for 'DCP' or, for crying out loud, a DVD........

Is there a way to convert the film to DCP using FCPX and/or Compressor?

Unfortunaly comprosseror doesn't offer a DCP option. You can use Adobe media encoder (but I never try its DCP encoder, so I don't know how good it is) or OpenDCP. If I remember well it is free. I used it once for a short film and it was good.
Anyway, why don't you try ask the cinema if they can plug a mac or a bluray player to the projector? Lot of professional systems have HDMI input.

Hi Navigator

Far from being an expert but try doing a search for "dcp o matic" and take it from there.

I wouldn't try making the DCP yourself if it's your first time : lots of things can go wrong and the issue is that you can encode it but you can't play it for testing purposes (decoding is extremely heavy)

Ordering it will cost you a few hundred bucks or indeed you can ask them if they can take an hdmi input

you can go via Premiere Pro or Davinci Resolve (with easyDCP). Both programs are able to deliver a DCP. Then there is also OpenDCP, which is free. Last spring there were news someone is developping a plugin for FCPX, but it isn't released by now. If you are no computer novice it is not so difficult, and if the result is not satisfactory, try again until it reaches your desired result.

Hi Navigator
For theater projection, do everything in your power to not use DVDs, especially with the footage formats you shot with. The compression alone would look terrible and DVD play back is limited to 480p resolution.
Creating a Blu-ray Disc (BD) is easy to do, provides vastly superior quality for projection. If the theatre has a BD player available or will let you bring one in, I would do that even as a back-up for DCP. Most standard BD players can play single(25GB) or dual layer BDs(50GB); with 1080p 60frames/s play back. Now there is even UltraBD with 4K resolution and up to 100GB disc. These require BDXL-Ultra players and USB3 I think??? HD 1080p plays fine with USB2.
You can burn a BD disc on your Mac. FCPX has an export (share) setting for creation. To avoid problems I would separate the actual burning by sending file to desktop and burning from there (right click .img file, burn to disk will show if BD burner is connected) or use Toast Titanium.
We showed an hour long movie via standard BD (1080p) projected at a historic theatre in Maine, and it looked very good. They ended up using the optical disc even though I provided a DCP version. I used Open DCP, I think.
Make sure to use good quality of optical disks, maybe even 2 different brands and make a back-up for each delivery method you create. Get there early and test.
Best of Luck
Hope this helps, Greg

I got the free DCP software from 'dcp o matic'. It took my iMac (2015 - 32gb, movie on 500gb SSD) 9 hours to convert 150gb to a 106gb DCP version. It even recognized the sound in 5.1. Yesterday the movie was downloaded to the cinema projector. Took about 20 minutes. It's absolutely perfect and stunning to see your own movie in a theatre :)

Thanks for the help!

Peter
