Hi this is something i've been wondering- when i have an iphone plugged into computer and fcp is open, is it necessary/beneficial to eject the iphone from FCP's import window before unplugging it? Also wondering if its necessary to eject if iTunes is open, havent been able to find a straight forward answer yet

And also since i'm on a roll- whats the best practice for ejecting SD cards before removing them from the mac? Is it best to eject in the finder window and/or eject from FCP import window?

Thanks!

I unplug the phone any time, except of course when it's doing something, like importing or syncing, but when it's done I just pull it out.

If FCP's open SD cards should be ejected from the import window. Usually you can't from the Finder with FCP open as you'll get a warning that it's in use. When you eject it in FCP it unmount in the Finder.

I can't eject a card from within FCPX. I get the spinny rainbow wheel of death for about 30 seconds and then it goes away. The card no longer appears in the import window. But it's still mounted on the desktop. Try to eject it and the Finder complains that Final Cut Pro X is still using it which is, of course, a lie. I can only eject cards by quitting FCPX. Not sure why the Mac just can't handle cards the same way it does iPhones which like Tom says can just be unplugged no biggie.

What cards are you using? How's it mounted? Cards are like hard drives. Don't just pull them out. They're mounted by the system. Phone isn't mounted in the system. Not a device to the Finder only to some apps.

Like Tom says. Personally I would finish what you are doing in the import window, close it and then eject from desktop, right click-eject disk.

I'd even do this for the iphone. I am of an age that remembers the hell you went through just unplugging something, either accidently or on purpose. Remember SCSI connections, ohhh those were the bad ol days!

Go to the extra effort to manually eject FWIW.

Usually a Sandisk SD card. Sometimes Sony. Mounted via a USB card reader. I have found that I can import footage from my Atomos SSD drive just by dragging the clips from the Finder window into the event, directly from the drive. I can then eject it without issue. If I go through the import window process, FCPX will not let me eject the drive.

Don't have that problem but I have a card slot on my computer. Not a problem with an external drive if I use the import window as long as I copy off it. I can then eject from the Finder. Does the Atmos drive appear as a camera or a device? I've not been in a situation were a drive appears as a camera.
