Collaboration in FCP10 - keywording

My editing partner and I would like to keyword our footage, working independently on separate computers and drives. How can we merge our keywords so that we can have a unified Library with all of the same information?

Thank you!

The wonks will have better advice in a few hours but, after looking carefully at the FCPX help system and some other discussions about keywords, seems to me keywords are held in the Library. But that implies, I think, since you probably are not able to or cannot work on the same Library at the same time, that your partner will only see your new collection of keywords after you are finished using your common Library and the next time he opens it.

in my ignorant understanding, not nice to entitle the masters sharing their knowhow here, 'wonks'.

sure you can 'share' or synch Libs, utilzing the Matzdorff-trick:

All good, no?

Wonk: a person who knows a lot about the details of a particular field (such as politics) and often talks a lot about that subject

a person preoccupied with arcane details or procedures in a specialized field

I never heard the word wonk before I must admit. And I'm German like you which makes it hard to get the real "feeling" for how a word can be used in terms of politeness. I just assumed that in a forum as friendly as this and with bogiesan posting quite frequently it could not be really bad. Maybe like "nerd" that turned from uncool to cool?

Come on, native speakers, enlighten ze Germans. Was a line crossed here or is it all cool?

Oh, and sorry for getting OT, just curious :)

Well, here goes: I am a "native" English speaker and I can say that I've never heard nor used "wonk" in a derogatory way - and I've heard it said a lot. Hereabout in the Washington, DC suburbs you hear "policy wonks" used frequently as described by wiktionary:

policy wonk ‎(plural policy wonks) (politics, government) A person who studies or develops strategies and policies, especially one who has a keen interest in and aptitude for technical details.

"Wonks" and the quality "wonkiness" is not generally considered to be a pejorative, rather just a description of someone who enjoys "getting in the weeds" - another idiom of which one should take no offense.

That said, many things don't translate well - in any language - do they? To paraphrase Lennon: "All we are saying is 'give wonks a chance.'"

Send each other XMLs of your libraries. If you have the same media that will carry the keywords in the the events.

If you work remotely, with two different Libraries sharing the same media, do what Tom says.

You also can work in the same Library at the same time, we will be doing a demo of this at IBC. If you work that way, you won't need to export XML. You just take each others' updated events whenever you wish.

... indeed, looks like a severe case of 'over moderating', should have use a PM.
2 British native speakers, by the way, blow into my horn, in terms of 'teachers pet', an 'overachiver', or in my tongue 'Streber'. Language is a fluid thing....
Anyhow, ..

Apologizes!!

Ronny,

How exactly can you work on the same Library at the same time? Care to give a brief "preview"? The "trick" that Karsten mentions above (the Mike Matzdorff technique using SyncFolders) is not a true real-time collaborative solution. It involves accessing a somewhat up-to-date copy of a synced library to access events/projects to be copied into a local library - but it is a one-way synchronization. For what the OP is asking here (a simultaneous metadata creation on the same Libraries/Events by more than one person) this would not work. Even with a 5 second synchronization period you run the risk of losing data.

Be careful with overlapping clips between events and libraries, if clips are "logged" twice, you'll end up with duplicate clips with similar metadata. :(

Sadly, FCPX can't merge metadata between clips.

I suggest, two separate libraries with two different sets of clips, that way, you can just merge them after your finished logging into a working library.

of course, logging is never really finished, so it's not perfect. I look forward to seeing what is going to happen at IBC. :)
