Hi,
I am luck to get a new mac and have found that the ports on the rear are no longer compatible with how i use to upload t0 FCP X. I used a IEEE-1394b 3 port repeater that has large thunderbolt ports. The new mac has mini thunder ports. I have tried a Thunderbolt to firewire converter but alas it did not work. I have tried to load directly on to a lace portable drive using the other ports but no joy on that now. The computer see's the hard drive but not the camera when connected to any port. The camera is a canon XH G1 that i have been using for at least 6 years with no uploading props.
Hopefully some reading this will be able to help.

firewire connected devices don't appear in the Finder, only in the System Profiler (under the menu)
Your camera is set to PLAY and at powerline (not battery) when connected?
