sRGB in FCPX was created by Emmanuel
Hi there

I have a question.

I am editing a shortfilm shot on a RED Scarlet. I did all the edit in FCPX, sent the project to Da Vinci for my colorist.

The colorist gave me back the clips, exported in sRGB.

When replacing my graded clips I have the feeling they lack contrast compared to what I saw at the colorists place. But I'm not 100% either.

Can it be that FCPx interprets this sRGB footage as rec709 ?

Thank you !!

I know tis will not help but since you are the client you should give instruction for your delivery "spec sheet" , this way no surprises. Resolve is so versatile in the delivery page , it is easy to re-render to what ever is your preference: one continuous production or clips plus handles with fcpxml in what ever codec you wish ...

my two cents

Out of curiousity I just exported color bars from Resolve first with output profile rec.709, second with sRGB.
Imported into FCPX they come out slightly different.

Thank you François and Nils

François you are right but the colorist told me it was better to deliver me sRGB for quality purposes, and of course I can ask Rec709 but I need to know what I'm doing.

Nils, yes, that's what I suspect, that's why I'm trying to understand how it works...

I found this online:
www.philiphodgetts.com/2011/09/fcp-x-color-management-secret/

So I guess the answer is: it doesn't matter what we ingest.

- That's five years ago FCPX got better...since then

One simple solution if you want to accept this delivery as it is, would be to apply a correction LUT . Your colorist could output one for you from a Resolve node or you can use Lutx basic correction in an adjustment layer to do this.

Regarding the article by Philipp Hodges:
It shouldn't matter what we ingest but in my little test both videos should render the same on screen, yet they don't.
I will investigate further when I'm back at the office

Still it would be interesting to know why your colorist considers sRGB to be better then REC.709. From what I understand the two color spaces are nearly identical...

In my experience, Resolve defaults to a 2.4 gamma. And I'm assuming FCPX defaults to 2.2 or possibly whatever your display profile is set to.

I've found the discrepancy is reduced by setting the Resolve project to work with a 2.2 Gamma, but it is still just slightly different when it comes back to FCPX (footage is just slightly brighter)

There is a possibility it can be to do with where you set the "data levels" in Resolve too, but I haven't bothered to look into it properly yet!

Just a quick update, for anyone who is interested. Setting "video levels" in Resolve on output to be "full" seems to fix the contrast discrepancy for me. The best way though in Resolve 12.5 seems to be to set the master settings colour space to “Davinci YRGB colour managed” and then select colour management, and make sure the input, timeline, and output gammas are all at 2.2 not 2.4 and use full data levels on output.

also worth mentioning the above means your final output will be 2.2 gamma, which, depending on where the content is being viewed could be wrong! for Broadcast it may be better to stick to 2.4

Did he provide you with ProRes files? Was he on a Mac?

I posted a quick trick in the Deliver Module to fix the low contrast exports:
Invalid consumer key/secret in configuration
