Proper metadata management of XML and other files?

The standard answer is keep everything, just import straight to FCPX and don't discard the metadata files.

However -- some Sony cameras (e.g, A7RII) use a simple file naming sequence such as C00001.mp4, C00002.mp4 -- which restarts every time you change the SD card. There is no way to override this or change it in the camera menus.

This means on a large multicam shoot with multiple Sony (or similar) cameras, you end up with a *lot* of duplicate filenames which must either be (a) renamed, or (b) kept in many separate folders.

Unfortunately renaming them is not feasible since the original filename is somehow embedded within the XML file. So even if you rename both .mp4 and XML file to the matching names, FCPX throws errors trying to import these. Renaming them successfully would require internally editing each XML file to match.

This in turn provides incentive to just delete the metadata files which you aren't supposed to do.

Has anyone encountered this or does anyone have any suggestions?
