How (not) to Edit Like a Pro?

Apart from the insanity that is Adobe, and the insanity of not having a magnetic timeline, I would of course be onto the Feeedback page asking for a "Delete All Gap Clips in Storyline feature."

With the Timeline Index, deleting gap clips is a breeze, or if you create roles ok, delete the roles in the timeline index...Apple why why why no delete Role/Subrole in the "Edit Roles" off the timeline????

I swear, was someone drunk, stoned or worse sane, when this was thought out..create and NO remove!!

Hi MsJustine

I end up sitting in literally dozens of programs every year.
Even the ones that are near to perfect have there imperfections.

Completely off topic but the nearest thing I have to perfection is my Sony PSX-75 Record player.
There is incredible turntable technology in there and some technology from the world of CD players!!!
It is a legendary record player.

Some thing that I think people often forget is that whether you love it or hate it…
Apple with FCP Legacy and now with FCPX have turned the industry on its head twice.

Like that is kind of Miles Davis territory.

But I diverse again.

For what it is worth here is the first article including the above 3 videos:

One last thought, thinking things through and executing them are two different things...
Lets see what the next update brings

In case any one is interested Part 4 is here:

Here is also the blurb for it:

Just as there are horses for courses there are also edits for different types of Jobs! Here I cover the first two of the standard three Edit Types in FCPX. Starting with the idiot proof, Append Edit. Which I am obviously a great fan of. I advise against using the insert edit as it is pretty destructive and it is easy to miss that you have even used it. I go all out Connecting clips to clips and build a stair way to heaven in the process. I even go to the other extreme and connect a clip to nothing! Further I work through a couple of examples where the Magnetic Timeline falls flat on its face. This is with a view to demonstrating how to cripple the Magnetic Timeline…

Part 5 is finished and I am currently working on part 6

Here is part 05 and the Blurb for it is as follows...

In this video I declare all out war on the Magnetic Timeline. And use two variations of Gap clips to achieve this. first up I use what I describe as a Mega Gap Clip. Which is nothing other than a Slug or Gap which has the same length of the planed length of the finished Movie. Thus it is possible to “Connect” clips to the Gap and shuffle them around much as you would in a traditional Timeline. Next up I grab the other end of the stick and make a Micro Gap Clip. Which is a clip which is 1 frame long. This is so small that I can place it at the beginning of my timeline and no one in their right mind will even see it. This helps me maintain my sanity and lets me swap out clips with out any nasty surprises! Last but by no means least I look at a quick and dirty way to shunt things around in my timeline using the little know “Position” tool!

OK all you smarty pants on FCP.co..please explain to me why my idea for connected clips to markers is a bad idea in regards episode 05-step 14-micro gap clips.

I am sure my suggestion renders this step 14 obsolete, in fact it renders most connected clip problems, and actually improves editing not weaken it.

This video episode just highlights what I was trying to say about connecting clips to markers, and now you have clear proof positive of my idea and why it is a great idea!!!!!! B)

MsJustine

This is all intended to be an exercise in humour not an exercise in what/who is right and wrong!

Maybe your clips connected to markers is a great workflow for you then good for you.

all the best

Paul

ps: From the accompanying article for part 2

However it is import keep an open mind. As some of the techniques outlined from here on in might indeed have their place. Knowing how to obey rules is not much good if you do not know how to break them and vice versa. At the end of the day it boils down to playing things by ear. Thankfully there is no ultimate idiot proof work flow. If there were we would all be out of a job yesterday! Welcome to Part 2 of how NOT to edit like a Professional. I hope that you enjoy the ride!

I am not saying who is right or wrong, this latest episode, part 14 highlights a serious flaw in the workflow of Final Cut Pro X.

A great concept of connected clips, that really should be optional on a clip by clip basis, if not then engineer a work around, attaching clips to markers is a work around.

My only point was to highlight a major oversight, a serious error, that sadly no one seems to care much about.

Final Cut Pro X, is still very half arsed coding, it has so many silly errors, and now many months since an update, and now even more errors compounding on errors, this is now becoming a sad state of affairs.

The silence speaks volumes...
