I'm having issues getting GoPro footage stabilized in fcpx. Any suggestions or best practices for smoothing out the footage in FCPX?

The company's video come out very smooth/clean so it's definitely possible, but I'm having issues coming anywhere close.

Some video simply cannot be improved. If you absolutely must have useable video from your GoPro under extreme situations, invest in the proper hardware.
It's far easier to shoot video from a stable platform like a tripod, shock mount, gimbals, or a chest strap than to assume (or hope) it can be rescued in post.

There are several ways to approach stabilizationn. What did you try?

If this is 4k, I have never seen good results from either FCPX or CoreMelt Lock & Load. No matter what parameters, it always has a lot of image warping.

If I take the same 4k shot, export it at 1080p, then re-import it, the stabilization looks a lot better. I don't know why and haven't had time to investigate it further.

Using a 3 - axis gimbal did the trick for me.

Obviously stabilizing when shooting is better than doing it in post. We've got 3-axis Osmos, various GlideCams for the larger cameras and a GlideCam X-10 vest, but we can't always use those.

I've had the impression 4k stabilization doesn't work as well in FCPX as 1080p did -- not just slower but it has more artifacts. However I just did some tests and I don't see much difference now. Will have to re-test later.

Back in Premiere I used proDAD Mercalli, which worked very well. That stabilizer is not yet supported in FCPX but is planned for the near future.

I have tried various clips using the stabilizing tools within FCPX. Most of the GoPro footage comes from head/chest mounts. While using a gimbal would nice great, it doesn't work for applications I'm needing often. I see the videos GoPro puts out with camera mounted on snowboarders, surfers, etc and it always looks so clean. There must be a way to get a cleaner image from a body mounted shot?
