I'm just curious to see whether anyone is working with surround sound.

Clearly the pros do with major film & TV releases. I'm interested in hearing from others if they have adopted the format yet or plan to in the near future. What's your opinions??

I did a lot of surround sound work in the past. The these past couple of years, more stuff is going on TV and compeer and mobile device screens I assume, and we've not been asked for anything but stereo audio.

Our studio adopts whatever formats our clients ask for. If clients ask for it, learn it, gear up for it, deliver it.

I work in surround from time tot time, but only when the end result is DVD and/or Blu-ray physical media. If I ever did it for TV I don't think I would have much fun because of all the dynamic range compression that's usually applied somewhere in the chain. I've never really heard impressive surround sound from TV.

Yeah I often wondered about the web content, since more it is becoming an online experience.

In some sense it seems like a backwards step in quality, like the first introduction of MP3, but given enough time and better streaming services, that quality will improve. But then, I'm not entirely sure surround sound on our computers or in our living room would actually improve the experience. Maybe a little, but I can't imagine it being a make or break scenario.

Redifer...

Its interesting what you say about TV. What kind of difference in dynamic range from Blue-Ray & TV?? I know a difference would exist, i just don't know how extreme it would be.

Simon, TV here in Colorado (and I assume the entire US) has a fairly limited dynamic range. Many Blu-rays are already remixed for the home with a "near field mix" unfortunately but even that blows away what's heard on TV. Often (and I assume this depends on the local station) the subwoofer channel is either not present of drastically reduced and provides very little sound. There's also very little variation in the peaks and valleys. This is all done so that people watching with their TV speakers don't have to keep turning the volume up and down when it gets loud or quiet.

So are you guys working with an actual surround system, or do you use a plugin like NX to monitor a surround mix via headphones... or both??
