Is the timeline saved anywhere?

I can't believe that once I export a movie and start a new one I have no option to come back to an earlier project and modify some things in the timeline.

Thanks

You make a new project by using Cmd-N or File>New Project. Did you do that? If you did the project gets saved in an event inside the library.

In recent versions of FCP there is a smart collections folder in which you can see all the projects available in all the events in the library. You can have as many projects as you want in any library, and you can open them at any time.

Well, I have several events, each one has its various images, clips and sound files.

So I assembled one movie, exported it, and when I started the second one I needed to put its items into the timeline and arrange everything. But now, as I want to change something in the first movie I can not find its timeline. All I have are the individual items.

Now before I export this new one I want to make sure I do not loose the timeline for it when I start the next one, so I am not experimenting. Can I somehow save it?

On the disk i have the one fcp master file where everything is stored. Looking at the package content I can access the individual events. Is the "CurrentVersion.fcpevent" where the timeline is actually stored?

Thanks

Tomas,

Do a search on "Final cut 10 2 snapshot". This may be what you are looking for.

Where did you get this idea? It is not true. Expressing or sharing a project, or a movie derived from that project, does nothing to the project itself. It's always available, as are ll of your projects, when you open the library the project was in.

If you are using the latest version of FCPX, in your library (located within FCPX in the library pane) click the smart collections and then click on the projects folder. You'll see your projects in there.

If, what you call 'fcp master file' is the one with .fcpbundle as its extension, then that's the one with the timeline in it. Just double click (or Command+O) on this fcpbundle, and your timeline will open in FCPX. Usually, you should never do anything with the files inside this .fcpbundle.

Hope this is what you're looking for.
Cheers!

HI Tomas,
a few suggestions:
a) learn the basics of FCPX (more on that in a second)
b) learn the nomenclatura ..'master file' is a consolidated movie-file, what you're talking about is a 'Library'.
c) never ever dig in the innards of any pkg-files of FCPX ...! There is no need to open an fcbundle in Finder, plus you risk to damage it to an unrepairable level!

conc.basics:
What I read from your discription is, that you didn't create a 2nd New Project. Then 'vers1' only exist as a backup, FCPX luckily creates every xx minute for you (depending on your personal prefs) automatically.

so, before more damage is done, check izzy, Larry Jordan, rippletraining, the usual suspects for How-To handle (and name) FCPX... I recommend Lessons or Final Cut Pro, avail at AppStore ... first 10 lessons are free.

Yes, you are right. I need to study more of the basics. For example: The advice to do a project snapshot seems to be exactly what I need.

However it turns out I created an "event" and exported the movie from there. So no project file - no snapshot.

Thanks to all of you for your help.

I got it sorted. Created projects, etc. created snapshot. Old stuff is preserved new version working on.

Thanks.
