Save only trimmed clips

Hey there,
I am currently traveling and only have the limited disk space of my laptop.

I have a lot of footage that is 30 minutes long but I end up using only 3 to 4 minutes of each of them. Now I have a proect thats 100 GB big and would like to know how I can remove all the unused footage?

I have tried copying the project into a new library and it copied only the used footage. But it still copies the complete clips and not just the trimmed parts of it.

I have removed them from the library, but they are still saved into the project folder. So how can I free up the space?

Do I need something like the Final Cut Library Manager ?

You cannot save only the used portions of clips in FCPX. If you consolidate your project you can save only the clips that are referenced in your project timeline but it will be the entire clip regardless of the in and out points, but you won't be saving all imported clips if they are not in the timeline. You can also delete render files and optimized media which will save space and then transcode to optimize them again later if you need to do do that. You can find these options when consolidating your project and also by selecting your library or events and choosing to delete generated library or event files from the FCPX menu bar.

Thanks for your response, I noticed that by now. I just got an external hard drive to solve my problem. Is this something that other editing software offers? I have researched a bit and a lot of people appear to have the same problem. My project file could be 8 times smaller. I have been thinking in cutting the clips previously before importing them to final cut, but this means a lot of additional work.

Legacy FCP version 7 and earlier allowed you to save used portions of clips and discard the rest, but as I recall it was not always a smooth process and sometimes buggy. I can't speak for any other modern NLE's. FCPX does, in some cases allow you to mark in and out points when importing clips so only the ranges you wish to use get imported into your project. Importing from camera cards or card folder structures however make this feature disabled. A workaround would be to import all clips and then move those mov files to another location. Reimport those clips marking in and out points for the selects you want.

Other way around: importing from camera card or card structure lets you select clip segments, importing clips from a drive does not.

I always found this a bit daft, given how limited cards and SSD drives are, the way FCPX handles media is a bit backwards, the old log/transfer from classic FCP was ideal, in that you set import ranges, when it came to tapes, well tapes were to be archived and only used twice, once to record, once to ingest, then you place the cheap tape on a shelf, never to use it again, now with cards, we have actually taken a giant leap backwards, to the days of early film, and limited film-stock.

Why Apple has never addressed this in ingestion phase staggers me, and well I hope it is sorted in a later update [is this update ever going to arrive  ?].

Camera Archive creates a clone, 1:1, that is no help, external hard drives, sure a way around, travel with external hard drives, not a great idea, stolen/dropped/left in plane seat pockets/hotel rooms, if it is very important, I suggest a subscription to a cloud service, pay the extra for added space, drop box etc, upload there.. 2 back ups, one in the cloud, the best insurance policy you can buy!!!

You can use this program called "Clip Exporter Pro" to export just your selected clips.

Just put all the trimmed clips in your storyline and then follow the instructions for the program to export only the clips in the storyline.

The great thing about this program is that it's taking the original media and copying it with only the parts you selected. Note that I said copy, not render. So when it does this you are not getting any gen loss.

I think it's about $100, but it's totally worth it for many reasons.

The reviews for this on the App Store are not encouraging (one star, does not work, developer not responding). Have you used it and what are your thoughts if so?

Personally if the app costs over $100, Apple should review it and label it Apple Certified, then you know it works. From what I read, I would be very wary of purchase.

Just checked the twitter, no recent posts, which is really worrying...

There is a new product now in beta which also does this -- Worx4X. I have not used it, but it's by the same people who did X2Pro:
