FCPX SEND TO MOTION was created by iskurrie
Hi All,

I have tried to find FCPX SEND TO MOTION but the links on this site don't seem to work. Any suggestions re finding a copy? I am looking at Xsend Motion however I don't like the idea that the round tripping will create motion generators which won't be stored in the project as such. Do the new generators actually include the clips in the project or do they only reference them when you send them back to FCPX. How well is Xsend Motion working for those who are using it?

regards

Ian

Hey Ian,

XsendMotion actually works very well.

No, the generators don't get stored in the FCP X project at this time. They are stored inside a dedicated XsendMotion folder by default. In classic FCP, the Motion projects created with the "Send to Motion" feature were not stored inside the FCP project either. So when you moved your FCP project to a different computer and you did not move the Motion projects as well, your FCP project would be showing missing Motion files. The same happens now with Xsend Motion.

But this may change. My (wild) guess is that we will be able to store any Motion templates (Effects, Generators etc...) inside the FCP X Library in the near future. If and when this happens, XsendMotion will be much more powerful than "send to motion" ever was. Actually, it already is.

Hi Ian
I bought Xsend Motion based on Ronny's review here, so he's to blame/praise for everything in the world :P

Thanks for the info and review Ronny.

I find it to work very well with a couple of exceptions.

FCPX color does not translate.(As documented and in RC review) This creates some issues for my workflow.
Having to create Compound Clips to export XML poses some extra steps. I also discovered that when I ungroup the CC; FCPX creates gap clips in Timeline if a transition was part of the CC.
I have discovered if I just create the CC, then create the XML file, I can then undo the CC creation and the Timeline is properly restored, but the Compound Clip is still in the browser and the XML still works.
Both of these issues are problems caused by FCPX not Xsend Motion.

My biggest complaint I can direct at Automatic Duck is using "X" as in x, as pronunciation instead of 10. Pet peeve of mine  Despite this, I do recommend this app.

See there is an 1.0.1 update to fix some bugs already.

Hope this helps, Greg

Thanks for everyone's replies. I think that this plug in will make a big difference in the utility of Motion for me which I have avoided using when possible owing to the difficulty of round tripping.

Thanks again

Though I would love to see that, I have some doubts.
One thing would still remain: the Problems with fxPlugs and serial numbers.

A relink option for fx would be nice and very helpful for shared projects.

Just a thought

Hey Andreas,

You are right, and this only relates to custom-created or user-modified Motion templates that are stored inside the Motion Templates folder. These can get modified any given time on any given computer, which makes them very difficult to track. Being able to store them in a centralized folder that can be accessed by all workstations (for shared storage environments), and being able to consolidate them inside a Library (for remote collaboration), would make many people very happy. This would eliminate the need for any relinking because they never would get offline.

Third-party fxplug plugins with dedicated installers are much easier to handle, you just need to install them on every system you need them on, and they will always be available. In such cases it would be useful if FCP X could tell us which effects in a Project are not available on your system and where you can go to purchase or install them.

In the meantime, this utility remains a godsend for everyone who has to deal with sending projects with effects across different computers: www.spherico.com/filmtools/X-Files/X-FXHandler/
