Flickering Titles

Hi All,

as already announced ;) I got a problem with getting a work to dvd. Now there are titles! A lot! Mainly chapters. And the subtitles do flicker - like a corrupt image or like there is a frame error in it (which is not). I tried a new test layout today - and the flickering was gone... so what the h.... is going on? is it maybe just an output problem? a burning speed problem? It is NOT flickering by the way inside fcpx... so what is it?

Only thing I can think of is an interlace problem. In the old days, if text was too thin (serifs usually were), it would tend to flicker between the interlace fields flashing on the screen.

But, burning DVDs is not an exact science, it could be other things. But if you got one working properly, I'd tend to think it was a bad burn. But that's weird.

thing is - already the playout of fcpx is corrupt - 2 titles flicker while 10 are good - all the same style same font (3d) not to thin though... can be maybe a 3 d problem... i´ll try out turn off the 3 d... i played original file pro res 422 (like the timeline) out... to not run into compression problems at first... odd...

trouble with DVDs, aka SDef + interlaced is how to judge quality?

imho, the only legit way would be to playback on a designated DVDplayer (hardware) and a SDef monitor... (where do you get those??)

because, let alone due to scaling you create all sorts of issues with interlaced material.
is your playback window on your Mac set to 720x470/768x576? just 1,2,3pix off and any edge on a 3D title starts to flicker... due to sheer size or due to colors (color resolution of DVD was ... no existing.)

so, for a start: what is your projects res? Do you judge playout quality in exact that res? Is your playout 'broadcast save', DVDs do color clip instantly ;) ...

can you post a screenshot of one of these titles? Mayb you just ask to much for poor 30y old disk ....

it could be, to catch up Ben's thought of 'art', you have to blur the whole stuff in hope, less detail tricks the encoder and the eye of the audience

Hey Karsten, don't know if I understand you correctly (maybe we should talk in german then ;) ) - I played out a pro res 422 timeline in pro res 422 - opened that up in quicktime and boom here we go - error! I already worked on it and left the 3d out of all the subtitles and it seems that exact that was the problem... at least the playout is clean... now I retry the burn.... stay tuned....

to answer at least a part of your questions... full hd project... I tend to leave it as long in its original format as possible... and then squeeze it in idvd or in compressor (although idvd does a second compression so mostly i throw in the 422 file... ) ... thats for now back in a while...

better not, our transatlantic allies feel soon excluded... :silly:

Yep, I was unclear, and I missed your point:
MY suggestion was about resolution...

But re-reading your post, you do have a 1080 project, and watched in 1080 is does flicker, right?

Again, can you attach a screenshot, preferred in 1920x1080?

(dachte, dass das ein scaling Problem sei, von 1080 auf 576 o.ä. aber die Flickerei tritt ja, wenn ich Dich richtig versteh', schon vorher auf...)

omg, denists! You should warn me!! gore ahead!! :woohoo:

What do you mean by jump?
The word Leitfaden appears twice, and there's another word ghosting 'dingers' ..
So with jump you mean Leifaden appears twice, should be one?

So, additional Q is: is this title a template? It looks like ...

oh with jumping i meant - it jumps when u play back. as like a frame error - but as already said it is not a frame error because there is no cut... its a title effect... seems that the 3d title was the problem though...

Have you tried deleting all render files for the project and re-rendering?

@Oliver
send you a PM in German, click on the tiny orange point upper right on this site when you're logged in...

I'm assuming, we have diff. opinions what 'flicker' means ;)

no - would have been worth a try... - as I already assumed it looks like a 3d title problem... I killed all the 3d subtitles and it worked out... but this is not a perfect solution. cause if u got 3d titles everything should be in 3d at least in the same graphics...

Moin O.

replied to your PM....

one more thing....
screengrab of timeline at that position - I assume, you have 'grouped' in some way those 3 words and the bar, right?

I will go for a screen shot tomorrow... no - no grouping this is a integrated title thing of fcpx ( you can find it under the title tab)... So I have just taken this - added 3d text instead of normal ... thats it...

.. meanwhile, after some Deutsch chatter ...

(my reenactment, wokrs well here...)

It's not about flicker, but the animated sub-title in the Template Tribute/Push jumps
My assumption is, that Oliver uses Tabs to place several words into the template ..

So, knowing the text-well is a bit iffy in FCPX, my suggestion is to erase the whole text (hit delete several times) and arrange the words with 'space' - not really professional layout, but my guess is, those tabs 'confuse' the text engine....
