For use in FCPX you need no manual conversion, FCPX can read orphanized mts....

Which is the point:
mts are regulary part of a AVCHD structure, serveral folders within folders, naming scheme, yaddayadda.... :woohoo:

For use in an NLE you should never strip-off this structure, valueable info gets lost, e.g. could create green flashes or 'jumps' in audio....

anyhow - no conversion needed.
Or, if you need it for other purposes, don't convert, just rewrap, e.g. I use this free tool
www.macupdate.com/app/mac/35968/remux

And Welcome, Elena, to fcp.co :)

As already stated no conversion is needed prior to import. If you need better editing performance you can create proxy or optimized media during import or afterward. I generally use proxy ONLY, as optimized is a lot bigger and takes longer to generate. Then you simply set the viewer to proxy, do your editing and before final output set viewer back to "Original" otherwise the output will be in proxy resolution.

Since browsing AVCHD files can be difficult on OS X, some people like to pre-convert to MOV using EditReady or similar tools. This workflow assumes your initial evaluation is outside the editor, then you pick files and import your selects.

However FCPX is so fast, I simply import everything without even looking at it, using "leave files in place". The old view was "I don't want all that junk in my library", or "it takes too long to import all that". That was before FCPX, which is the fastest possible method to browse video content.

FCPX may have to re-wrap AVCHD on import so the process may be slower than importing other file types with "leave files in place". However in general I prefer the "import everything" approach.

It's best to let FCPX do it on import from the original card, but on the occasion when I have .MTS files without the original structure, I use Media Converter with the Re-wrap AVCHD for Quicktime - uncompressed Audio preset.
