Grading and viewing 2 clips together

I'm finding it really difficult to match some clips I'm grading. I want to view two clips side by side with scopes, and pick a different frame to view in each clip with a crop applied to isolate an area of skin.

I've got the dual viewers up by hitting cmnd control 3. And I've got the scopes showing in each viewer. I can then scrub to a frame in a clip in the browser and get that to display in the left viewer. I don't seem to be able to do the same for the right viewer.

Where am I going wrong? Can anyone talk me through this? Or point me to a tutorial?

Unless there's a plugin out there, I don't believe you can load up a clip to be seen next to another clip to reference while grading in the timeline. Denver Riddle just hops back and forth—and he's just using a single viewer without the viewer from the Browser.

The only time I've seen a clip side-by-side for color reference is with the Match Color function, which will load up the current clip and pull up a source to reference and take color values from. Of course, there's always workarounds where you can use clips on another layer above to see them (like a split view).

I take that back... Would this even work?

1. Edit inside a Compound Clip instead of a Project
2. Open the Event Viewer for dual viewers—note, the Event Viewer only shows clips from the Browser
3. Since Compound Clips can be skimmed in the Browser, it can also be loaded up in the Event/Browser Display. Skim to load a shot from the Compound Clip in the Event Viewer.
4. In the timeline, navigate to a clip in the same Compound Clip and color correct as needed.

*The idea here is that you are editing inside a Compound Clip and also skimming the same Compound Clip in the Browser.

This totally works!

When you first create the Compound Clip, I'f found that it doesn't show any content right away when scrubbing. But if you jump around to another folder and back, the view updates in the Browser and you can scrub normally.

The right viewer is your canvas which only displays clips in your timeline. Browser clips won't show up here normally but using davechap's workaround will get you by.
