Why do you want to delete the gap clip?
Everything in FCP ha to be connected to something on the primary storyline. The gap clip simply gives you something to connect the clips to.
You can collapse the connected content onto the primary storyline by selecting the clips and using Opt-Cmd-down arrow.

Thanks, it was just getting in the way of other clips but as you suggested collapsing another clip in to it worked perfectly.
