Synchronizing Clips and Memory pressure. was created by nils.dettmann
Hi
Sometimes synchronizing clips takes a really long time.
I already looked at CPU and Disk I/O but both are always normal to low.
Now I had the Memory tab open in the Activity Monitor (should have looked there before) and Memory pressure is all to the top with those clips.
Audio is an hour and video clips are up to three minutes.
FCPX is using 26 GB (out of 16 GB physical memory) That goes down to below 1 GB, when the sync process finishes.
Out fo curiosity I went to a Macbook Pro with 8GB RAM. Here the activity Monitor shows 9 GB used by FCPX when synching the same clips. Memory pressure is all red, too.
Is everybody seeing this behaviour. We are talking about audio files, so 26 GB is really a lot!
And cancelling the sync process normally takes forever, when a big amount of RAM is taken. Sometimes even crashes Final Cut.

What format are the audio and video clips?

ProRes HQ Mov and Multichannel wav.
Deselecting channels in the wav helps though it would be interesting to know if it´s sort of a memory leak or just hard on the underlying programming.
It seems to scale with the number of active channels.
And as I said. When it uses a lot of RAM, cancelling the progress takes a long time.

I've never noticed the RAM usage, and synching has always been quick for me.
(usually 3 1 hour clips of AVCHD, and 1 or two Stereo WAV files on a mac mini with 8GB of RAM)
Canceling synchs for me usually takes a long time, or even locks up FCPX.
The only time I've had synching take forever, is with .mts files with 5 channel ac3 audio, but rewrapping them as .mov + converting the audio to PCM fixed the problem, and now I import though FCPX, so I no longer have that issue.
Next time I have to synch a lot of footage, I'll defiantly check the RAM usage.

One IMPORTANT note on synchronizing and deselecting audio channels as I mentioned in an earlier post.
Be aware that on deselecting audio channels before synchronizing, you will have to enter the timeline of all synchronized clips one by one and re-enable them.
If you don´t do that, they will still show up in the inspector under audio but the audio is muted within them!
