How do I get the stabilization in the video inspector?

Help guys:

I've been trying to smooth out an eight second clip but I can't find "Stabilization". In the FCPX help, it tells me to
In the Video inspector, do any of the following:

"To reduce the shake: Select the Stabilization checkbox.

To reduce rolling shutter distortion: Select the Rolling Shutter checkbox.

When you turn on Stabilization or Rolling Shutter, its checkbox turns blue.

Stabilization and Rolling Shutter controls in Video inspector"

My problem is I can't get "stabilization" to show up. All I get is color correction, transform, crop, distort, spatial conform and compositing. What am I missing? I'm sure it's something simple (maybe that's why I can't figure it out).

Thanks

Is the clip in a project? If not you need to open the clip into the timeline. Generally it's best to do stabilization on the edited clip in the timeline.

Good Morning:

Thanks for the quick reply. The clip in question is in the timeline that's why I don't understand why it's not showing up in the inspector.

If this is a multicam clip or single-cam synchronized clip you can't use FCPX stabilization directly from the the timeline. If the stabilization option simply doesn't show up in the inspector this may be the problem. There is a complex workaround; see below.

The other limitations on multicam include cannot apply optical flow smoothing, cannot use a tracking plugin like SliceX on multicam, and cannot use Auditions.

Workaround for lack of FCPX multicam support for stabilization, optical flow, etc:

1. Select clip on timeline
2. Shift+F to locate clip in event browser
3. CMD+1 to select event browser
4. Note clip begin/end time code and write them down
5. Double-click on clip in event browser to open in angle editor
6. In angle editor press CTRL+P and type in the timecode you wrote down
7. Blade that section of the clip, the apply stabilization
8. Return to main timeline
9. If stabilization needs adjusting (parameters aren't available in Inspector for MC clip), then do it all again.
10. Repeat entire process for every MC clip requiring stabilization, optical flow, or tracking.

Is it in a project or did you open it in the timeline? Please post a screenshot. What version are you using?

Can't you do this with the clip skimmer in the project? It shows you the timecode for the multicam clip for the appropriate section you want to cut. Find that timecode in the angle editor, cut the clip, and apply stabilization to the cut segment. That's if you don't want to stabilize the whole angle.

Yes that is essentially the same procedure I outlined in detail above. The situation is typically encountered after you are finished with rating/keywording in the Browser and have made the multicam edits in the timeline. Then and only then do you know what clips need stabilizing, optical flow smoothing, etc. Stabilization is so time consuming you normally cannot afford to stabilize the entire angle, plus that can throw off the analysis.

So you are already in the timeline which requires backtracking to the event browser to get the timecode, then jumping to the angle editor to blade the section and apply stabilization, then back to the timeline where you started to render and evaluate it. Since stabilization often requires several fine-tuning adjustments per clip and since the controls are not visible in the timeline (even after the effect is applied) every adjustment requires a repeat of this procedure.

I don't believe that's necessary. If you use the clip skimmer in the project you're shown the timecode of the multicam clip. When you open the multicam clip from the project you can skim in any angle to find the multicam timecode for where the edit was made. You can then cut the section in the angle editor and apply stabilization. Once the analysis is complete you can select whatever option you want. As far as I can see there is no need to go back to the browser.

Once you have the section cut and stabilized, and you don't have to cut exactly, as long as you have enough to cover the area used in the project, you can adjust the stabilization as you like. In the angle editor to can set the appropriate angle as the monitoring angle and adjust the stabilization settings there while previewing its effect.
