Deleting Original Media + Reconnecting to Optimized

Deleting Original Media + Reconnecting to Optimized was created by lizjperl
Importing XAVC footage from the FS5. FCPx will not let you "leave in place", so it unwraps the clip + creates xdcam mov files as "original media" as well as 422 "optimized" files. I can move the RAW files once that process is finished, but I'd also like to delete the original media that fcp created to free up space on my drives. I will only be using the optimized media for my final edit + master file.
When I did a test by simply throwing one clip in the "original media" in the trash, the clip didn't show up as disconnected, but when I "revealed in finder" it couldn't locate the file.
Is there a better way to delete the OG folder?

There is no need to optimize the media. Don't waste space on the ProRes. You shiuldnt remove the original media.

The original mov files won't slow down the computer? I'm confused on whether the unwrapped files are xdcam or prores, would prefer to edit with prores since it's a large project.

While I could be wrong, I think you are confused about Camera cards and "Leave files in place".
FCPX will not let you "Leave Files In Place" for importing media if the original files are on your camera card or if you created a "Camera archive", FCPX sees these both as files that would likely be erased.
You can however, import the files into FCPX and place on external drives.
While importing there is a check box for "Creating Optimized media and or Proxies".
As Tom says, there is most likely no need for creating Optimized media. ProRes files are quite large in general. If you experience spinning beach balls, then it may help to use Optimized or Proxies, but if your computer can handle the original file format, go with that.
Placing media files on fast external drives may also speed up editing, just depends, but IMHO it is a good practice.
Hope this helps, Greg

yeah with this particular camera, it only recognized the files as a "camera card" even if I move the files off of a card + onto an external drive

If you are copying the card in Finder, the file will be maintained as a "Camera Card". There will be files in the top level with camera file structure. (DCIM, etc…)
If you use the "Import Media" inside FCPX, then FCPX will discard the top level camera structure and import the media with proper format.
You can set the location for imported media in the Library Pane of FCPX.
Hope this helps, Greg
