I just go download it manually so it will stop yelling at me every time I open FCPX...It also relentlessly tries to install "TIMECODE" plugin for some reason...very annoying...but oh well.

Sorry for the trouble with the autoupdate, just go ahead and install the latest build manually from here:
fxfactory.com/download/

I also do not like all the addition content FX Factory tries to download. Had to quit it to stop downloading apps I don't want.
There is also a lot of bloat that I will never use, like Adobe files and lots of other junk just taking up room on my drives. I know this is for FxF universal usage, but I really don't like not having control of what gets loaded into my system.
That and occasional crashes are the downsides to FxF to me. Adds to troubleshooting problems.

It did install PhotoMontage though , which I didn't want and have disabled, how do get rid of these altogether though? The only reference to it I can find is in Library > Application Support > FxFactory > Photo Montage.fxproxy.
If I delete this will it get rid of it?

FxFactory attempts to download/install all products that you have purchased in the past automatically. If you quit the app it will simply retry to download them the next time the app is launched.

The latest FxFactory installer (soon to be released) is going to be under 9 megabytes... It doesn't fit on a floppy disc, but it does not take a lot of room. In comparison, the Desktop Wallpapers that come with OS X alone take up 434MB on disc.

Sure you have control, you can easily activate/deactivate the individual products, or all trial products with a single click, so that only the effects you want show up inside your host applications. See the following tutorial:

See the following tutorial to easily activate/deactivate products:
If you would like to uninstall a product completely you can hold down the Option Key inside the FxFactory app.
