Object removal using later footage where object removed?

Hi,

I was shooting a discussion panel with three people seated in chairs with a locked down tripod. Due to last minute issues a small Macbeth color chart was left by the photographer and I noticed this when I panned from the podium to the three panelists. The chart was on the table(knee level) for several minutes before a pause occurred and the chart was removed.

Since the tripod was stationary after panning to the three panelists, how can mask the color chart using footage I shot later after the color chart was removed. This is almost like cloning out an object such as a light stand in Photoshop if you have a locked down tripod and take photos with and without the light stand.

I imagine this should be pretty easy to do. Just not sure how to mask the area of the color chart and choose area of overlaid video.

Thanks.

stack the 'clean' clip over the other
apply Draw mask (Effects/Masks)
draw mask (adjust feather)

... that simple.

and there are commercial plugins avail, which allow to 'clone-stamp' moving content, e.g. SliceX from coremelt.

Hi Filterstuck.

Yes, this is pretty easy.
Place a copy of the footage without the colour chart above the footage that does ( Q ) and use the crop sliders in the inspector to isolate an area that covers roughly only the unwanted object. You can alternatively use a mask for more options ( shape & feathering ) but sometimes a simple crop will do it. As long as your tripod doesn't wobble or nobody walks across the masked area it should work fine and watch out for changes in colour temperature between the two clips. Lighting has a nasty habit of changing subtly over time. :)

Steve.

One problem you're agent to have is tracking that masked square during pans. TrackX would do the trick just fine.

as mentioned before, and sorry to correct you, Ben:
Object Remover is part of SliceX, not TrackX

Alternatively, pans can at times look a bit awkward anyway so it could simply be easier and cleaner to remove it completely and do a straight cut or a cutaway to the audience if available.

I did not mention the SliceX object remover. I was referring to the previous post to mine, describing masking out footage that did not contain the slate, above the original footage. Then TrackX would help track that overlay clip.
