Change the Starting Timecode on Compound Clip

As the title suggests, I'd like to change the starting timecode on a compound clip I created.
Currently, it's greyed out. Anything I can do to make it editable?

Has to be done with the CC is originally created.

After the fact, you'd have to do something like break it apart in a Project timeline, re-group into a new CC, and set the starting timecode to zeros.

Since I´m looking into fcpxxml a lot at the moment, it is possible on an xml level, though I wouldn´t recommend it.
If you export an xml for a compound clip, change the starting timecode and reimport it, FCPX will just ignore the new timecode.
You have to delete the unique id (uid) of the compound clip within the XML effectively generating a new, separate compound clip with no ties to the old one.
But that´s probably more work than just making new clips from within FCPX.

Would be easier if you could set the starting timecode when you create a compound clip from within a timeline..

just to feed my curiosity:
Why?

my imagination lacks a scenario where I need that....

For me it would have been two less steps in syncing large amounts of footage via Plural Eyes.
For sorting I want my clips to have the right starting timecode.
But from my perspective that wouldn´t justify going the xml route.

thanks Nils,

although not totally convinced yet ;)
No PluralEyes here, happy with FCPX' own Multicam - and there, I don't care about TC/Timestamps. btw: compounds in multicams??

'sorting clips' gives me a lil' shower... clips sorting here not by numbers but by tags...

... I have to confess, I'm the guy here who's well-known finding compounds a but spooky.. and before Ben's telling me the 500th times, they are valueable member of the family ;) ... yep, ok, using them either, .. but rarely&respondsible...

but giving them an own timebase....? .. strrrrange :P

I totally agree, to me they are a little spooky, too.
And in the end I didn´t use them, just a little stop on the journey.

Regarding the sorting:
In a documentary project I have a second camera running once in a while and I feel the shots will just get forgotten / never be used if they are not timecode related to the main camera.

fcpradio.com/episode006.html
Mike Matzdorff uses the word 'beats' for material belonging to a 'scene' (I would simply call it sequence .. but am I Hollywood??), .... aaand how FCPX' keywords helping him organzing/collecting such material, from diff. camera, locations, dates (!) ...

..... probably, you come under the impression, I want to convince you NOT using TCs or even change them (the 'made' date is a valueable meta date) .... but that's not my intention, nooo, Sir, no way .....

From a organizational and even from a narrative perspective I see timecode quite similar to tags, just that they are unique to a very small amount of clips.
It´s time of day timecode so it also helps in understanding the situation.

But thanks for the episode, I will be[strike] looking[/strike] hearing into it.
I would think feature film is probably different to documentary but the more I´m getting into it I´m learning that the way of storytelling is not so different between the two.

no doubt, a 101% !!

just recently <cough> I stumbled upon Philip Hodgetts last years <cough> presentation of his Lumberjack suite. ok, it was mainly a promotion for his product, but it is one of the best demoes of one of FCPX' core and unique features - organization.

a dream for unscripted productions, docs or realityTV or sports ....

Love the phrase "logging on-set gives me more time to sleep!"
Love the example, logging 'live' on sports events (I'm that soccer dad) - setting a time marker 10sec before something's happening is frankly GENIUS, and creating keywords on-the-fly, on-set either ...

... and (Philip, look there!! <pointing in opposite direction> ) :
being hobbyist on a nobudget, I can fake a (very) vaguely smiliar function with the completely underrated 5€ app Apogee Metarecorder ...

Lumberjacks latest incarnation creates keywords automatically, from transcripts - how cool is that ??

We´re getting slightly :P OFF Topic but:

I looked into Lumberjack. Will certainly try it when I have a bigger team.

My ideal solution:
An app with just two buttons
Button 1: Set Marker
Button 2: Record my voice and set then words I say as keywords for the clip actually running.

Should be easily possible and I would even get an iWatch for this.

Thanks for the responses.
I made a new compound clip and change the starting timecode upon creation. I then copied the footage from the old CC and pasted in the new CC and everything is great.

Why would I need to change the starting timecode? Well I'm working with two videos...one is a person interpreting ASL of a seminar. The other video is of the seminar. Can't exactly do multicam editing here. The interpreter did 15 minute segments, so she could rest her hands, and the video is about an hour long.
Can I edit with the starting timecode at a weird time, of course. But it's just slightly easier if I have everything start at 00:00:00:00 and not 00:37:24:19.

I believe it inherited this timecode because of the camera settings? Not sure.

There are of course Timecode overlay effects plug-ins. Might find that useful.

Hope this helps, Greg

I've done a bit so ASL interpreter stuff, it can be tricky. Was the interpreter present during the seminar, or is this being added in post? I'll assume added in post. Filme her 15 minute segments, but have the camera picking up the seminar audio from the original video. Then you could do multi am super easily. But yeah, what you're doing can be tricky.

The seminar is Financial Peace University. The seminar was recorded in 2012, I think.
If you're not familiar with this, it is kind of set up like a class. Nine videos that are about an hour long and are watched over the course of 9 weeks. I attend a deaf church (I am hearing, but my wife is deaf) and we are going through this course. Instead of having a live interpreter stand next to the TV, I decided to record the interpreter in front of a blue backdrop. I'm also having to adjust the captioning as it is as horrible as the auto-generated captions on YouTube.
Anyway, the interpreter interprets 15 to 20 minutes of the video and takes a break. If you ever go to a live event that's 30+ minutes, there are usually 2 or more interpreters that switch off. The reason is because it's very exhausting. You're hands hurt and your brain hurts from translating. And if the speaker is fast, you will be numb by the end.
Luckily, I also know ASL, but piecing it together is still tricky. I just add cross-dissolves between the segments. I tried mMorph Cut, but it did some funky stuff.

If you're interested...

I set up a Motion template of a layout I created. In FCPX all I do is drop in the seminar video and the interp CC into the dropzones. Then I used SugarFX Subtitles to add in the subtitles. They are burned into the video. I can't turn them on and off. I fixed the subtitles using MovieCaptioner.
Something like this:
