T3i to FCPX to DaVinci Resolve 12 to deliver was created by Vardor
I'm a newbie in this area and I'm seeking the best way to get the most out of my video production.
Does my T3i give the choice of being in H264 or prores 422?
Seems not, so how best to convert it to proress422 for FCPX?
Then also Ive been told that in Davinci Resolve 12 i should be using proress 422 codec for best color correction/grading quality
If the proress422 files are very large, can I use the space on my Seagate external hard drive while doing correction/grading?
If this is all true, then when I'm finished grading, what do I need to do with that? Do I need to convert it back to H.264?
I've been told H.264 is a good final codec when finished.
Thanks!

the actual version of FCPX handles your cameras files natively, no need to convert.
If you want to, tell FCPX to 'optimize' the files on import (or later).
Optimized media have the advantage of demanding less 'steam' from your set-up.
You not only could, you should use ext drives for media storage.
Conc. DV Resolve, others should answer.... not my domain.
And Welcome to FCP.co!

What type of file or codec is the footage once you optimize it? Is it then prores 422?
i just selected one part of one take of the footage in FCPX, as a test run, and I optimized it.
It took a couple minutes, and as soon as it reached 100%, FCPX crashed.
I reopened it, it took awhile to reopen. Now FCPX is up, but the curser has no effect at all on the items, the edited video and its audio, in the timeline, and anytime i press play, instead of seeing and hearing the edited movie and its audio, im seeing the edited video, but hearing the footage. Mouse and cursor have no effect.

when you said "actual" did you mean to say the current version?

I think T3i only does H.264.
You can select to Optimize in the FCPX import window.
ProRes will hold up to color grading and compositing/effects better than H.264, yes.
As said, you should be using a secondary drive for all media and Libraries anyway.
Once you're in ProRes, there's no real reason to go back to H.264, you should just stay with ProRes. You can edit, grade, comp with native H.264. Depends on how hard you want to push the files.
No, H.264 is super compressed, data tossed out, no it is NOT the best. ProRes would be far superior. But, if you want to put your final products online, then H.264 versions are better, more efficient to use.

so, your set-up is in bad shape.
have you told us your specs? no...
other issues let me guess, your internal drive is 'full'.
check first for avail disk-space..
plus, did you had any basic tutorials, books, 1on1s for a start?
I'm assuming, we're doctoring symptoms..... instead of doing it right from square#1
